MI: Univ staff being issued "weapons" to combat active shooters

Post by ELB »

Faculty trained to use pucks to thwart shooters
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) — Faculty members at Oakland University in suburban Detroit have received hockey pucks and are being trained to use them to potentially thwart active shooters.

...

The faculty union also is working with student groups to distribute an additional 1,700 pucks to students.

ETA: If I carried a hockey puck with the intent to use it as a weapon for self-defense, would that be legal under Texas law? I can't carry a club for self-defense (which is lunacy), nor throwing stars (IIRC). How about throwing pucks? I'll probably stick to my handgun, but would be nice to have options, no?

ETA2: Just to clarify, I think it is lunacy that I can't legally carry a club for SD, not that carry a club is lunacy. ;-)

Did they issue holsters as well?? Off-body carry won't insure that the "weapon" is at hand and ready to use. I suppose pocket carry is an option with certain attire.

It sounds to me that the school administrators and faculty are a bunch of hockey pucks.

Do they have to spend two minutes in the penalty box if they intentionally hit him with a puck?

This just brings so many questions to mind.

Are they to be open or concealed carried? Are they registered? What if students decide to use them on one another? If this is an effective method, why are police officers and our military not issued pucks? Are these considered less lethal weapons? What if someone dies from being hit with one? Can they do warning throws with them? What if they are brandish one but don't throw it? What about printing?

Could that be "pucket" carry instead of pocket carry?

I wonder if they are required to keep them frozen like the NHL does.

If after one throws a puck they, in one fluid motion, reach for another and throw it, is that considered semi-auto puck launching? Also, if one throws pucks in rapid succession, is that considered "full auto?" If pucks are stored on campus, will that be considered a "cache."

I feel sure they will require a back ground check of puck owners and full registration of the pucks.

Next thing you know, we'll be talking common sense puck control. Nobody needs these scary black pucks after all. :biggrinjester:
