Where and when did you learn to shoot

When I was 8-years-old my dad got me a Daisy BB gun.
I didn't shoot much after that point in my life until recently.

My dad taught me to shoot with an old Stevens (I think) single shot 22. I was about 5 or 6 back in the mid 60's. When I got older he taught me to shoot his Iver Johnson break open double action revolver in 38 S&W. He still has both of them but neither one works anymore. The 22 broke a firing pin and the revolver just plain wore out. My grandfather used it as a duty weapon in the 20's to the 40's.

Guess I'm a different kind of breed. I never had a Red Ryder BB gun. I had some other lever action Rifleman replica BB gun that held about 100 BB's and shot them as fast as I could operate the lever and pull the trigger. Shot anything that was in the back yard and some that weren't. Learned most of what I know from watchin TV westerns and war movies. Never really had any formal traning till I hit High school and got into ROTC. I shot better then the Rifle team Captain at the time and son became the captain myself. That was a trip shootin those high dollar pellet rifles since they where all made for a right handed shooter and I was a south paw. Go figure. Made some friend with a fellow cadet who's dad was in the military and had all manner of guns. Thats when the real experience began. Then obtained my own from a shady deal and then got busted with it and took a break from guns . Then I got back into them at the beginning of the year. Never looked back since. All in all I think I shoot OK for City Boy.

Daisy BB rifle Christmas 1963. (10 yrs. old)

The bird population in South East Kansas suffered a sharp decline.

Mom showed me what little she knew about guns and then turned me loose.

Got a .22 rifle two years later.

Self taught...except for what I have learned by watching others. Still watching and learning over 40 years later.

Dear old Dad got me started at six with his father's 12-gauge, double-barreled ("side by side") shotgun in Katy, Texas.

I got a little more training later on in the Navy, but Pop had me squared-away long before then...

Although my father was career military and an avid hunter, he never taught his kids to shoot. We were exposed to firearms and occasionally allowed to handle them when supervised, but that was about it.

When I left home to attend college, I joined ROTC and the schools pistol team. Since I was 19 at the time, it was a rather late start for me.

My kids, on the other hand, are receiving a much earlier introduction.

I started around 25, quit for a decade and have recently got back into it, although from looking at the targets, I cant really say I've "Learned to shoot", I guess I pull the trigger and hope.

When I was young I had a BB gun but never used it much. I could never hit anything small with it past about 30 feet. I never figured out it was the gun and not me.......

I guess my real first shooting experience was around 10 or so when my Father bought two new shotguns. He bought two new Browning's, a 12ga for him and a "Sweet Sixteen" for me and we went dove hunting. I learned to shoot dove pretty well and I wish I still had that Sweet Sixteen!

At around 12 or so, he bought me a surplus .303 Lee Enfield and took me Deer hunting in South Texas. I managed to bag a 4 point buck that musta weighed all of 90 pounds! I felt bad about killing it and I have never gone Deer hunting since.

After that it was 17 and Vietnam.........

Now, it's waiting for the Zombies!

when i took my CHL class, i ran into a lot of old schoolers that served in nam. heard a few stories, seems like even the older guys have the marine vs army mentality. lol.

first time i shot a firearm was when i was 4 or 5, and it was a .22lr rifle.

i bought my first pistol back in april OF THIS YEAR because i heard gunshots a few nights in a row. it was an xd9 service. then i bought a glock 21sf, then a glock 30. then i sold the glock 21sf and got a 1911 (para ord ssp), then i got a kimber pro carry II.. then i sold the glock 30, and picked up a para ord slim hawg (carry), then i bought a DW CBOB 10mm.. then i bought a DW CBOB .45acp. then i sold the slim hawg and went back to glock, got a glock 27 for carry. and i just sold the kimber and plan on buying the wife a purse for our one year aniversary.

so i've been in the firearm hobby world for about 6 months now. lol. but i get as much practice in as i can. next project is a 9mm ar15 or a custom 9mm 1911. now THOSE are for the zombies.

Good to hear you are a GUN NUT as well. My Son is about your age (1985) and he is already started with a H&K USP .45! He likes that "Plastic" stuff. He is going thru the training now to be a PoPo in Canada where he lives with his Mother.

I just picked up a RRA 16" M4 AR-15 and put a new AimPoint CompM4 Sight on it. Ordered 2000 rounds of ammo and 12 30 rounders. Tac sling is on it and Tac Vest on the way. I will be ready soon!

Went pheasant hunting a couple of times on the family farm in Nebraska in my early teens. I used my dad's 16ga side-by-side and shot my first bird with it.

Beyond that, I shot rifles and handguns for the first time with a friend in December of last year. Bought my first two rifles in January and my first handgun in February. Took my CHL course in March and got my plastic in May.

Daisy BB gun at age 6 (1966)

Joined a Police Department sponsored NRA Junior Rifle Team at age 8, got a .22 single-shot rifle and a .410 shotgun both that year. Hunted frequently with Dad.

Age 12, joined a different NRA team and shot match.

During teen years shot on competition team and hunted.

Age 18 joined the Police Department Reserve Unit and started shooting on their competition team (Gold Cup Match .45!) for about 4 years.

Got burned out and after getting married at age 22, started hunting with gun and archery only.

After 25 years, now getting back into shooting about 4 months ago and loving this forum!

Now you know my life story!

My dad took my out near where Austin White Lime is today and I shot his Remington .22 pump. I was about 8 at the time and around 1973.
