Frisco/Plano students create "Securegun" - It'll never fly!

The above link is an article in the Plano Star Courier newspaper/website. Plano and Frisco are neighboring cities in Collin County, north of Dallas.

We've all seen other "smart guns" which none of us would ever buy: you must wear a special ring or bracelet, they can't be handed over to a non-wounded friend during an attack, they only come in .22 caliber, plus they cost about $1800.

Well, that "gun" is bad enough, but read the above link. These students are so far out of the loop as far as understanding what a personal firearm needs to be able to do......well, they are just too precious when they think that their terrible excuse for a firearm is something that gun owners would embrace.

There's so much wrong with this Securegun, I'm not even going to start. Don't criticize the current huge prototype. Even if they could make the final product the size of a government 1911, the "features" on this gun would ensure the death of its owner should evil come calling.

Oh, by the way, what's the brand and model of the gun that can shoot 100 rounds a second? :-)

So many things wrong with the initial design, and no....I'm not talking about how it looks.

Geo-fencing to lock the gun so that you could not shoot in a "gun-free zone"...I doubt they'd want police to carry this. I know there are times when I'm in church, or other structures that I have no GPS signal, let alone cell phone signal. Police carry firearms for the same reason I do, to provide a tool that can be deployed should deadly force be necessary.

The article mentions a camera being used to identify an "unarmed" target and locking the gun down to 1 round per 20 seconds. What if the person misses that first shot that they have to take? What if the attacker is not stopped by the first round? We've all read numerous stories and seen videos where it can take multiple rounds to stop an attacker.

As surprise_i'm_armed said, this is just a gadget WAITING to get it's owner killed. So many questions for the designers. What happens when the battery runs out? What happens if a flashlight is shining in the camera lens? Can a bad guy deceive the system by concealing his weapon behind his back until the last moment? And these are just a few questions off the top of my head.

I think it needs to be field tested by at least three major metropolitan police departments as their sole duty gun, for at least three decades, before "civilians" get their hands on "Securegun" technology. Because, you know, reasonable gun control.

I disagree. I think it needs to be the sole weapon used by any security for anyone that supports gun control for the same time frame. Then we give it to the FBI for a few decades, and then we can begin police department testing.
