Just some cool SBR updates...

Post by The Annoyed Man »

I took delivery on a new BCM 11.5” upper for my registered lower a few days ago, and I thought I’d share a little bit here with some pics.

The registered lower is one I’ve had for a while. It’s a Spikes Tactical Gen II Billet Lower kit with all ambidextrous controls. The trigger is a Timney Competition unit with a 3 lb. pull. The stock is a Magpul ACS-L, which has a handy little storage compartment for my skittles. The bolt carrier is a Smith Enterprises chromed match M16 unit, with a Leitner-Wise NiB bolt and parts.

The upper is this one: https://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-BFH ... r-a-10.htm.
Features:
  • Cold Hammer Forged Barrel
  • M4 Feed Ramp Barrel Extension
  • M4 Feed Ramp Flat Top Receiver
  • T-Marked Upper Receivers
  • USGI 1/7 Twist Rates
  • USGI 5.56 NATO Chambers
  • Mil-Spec 11595E - Certified Barrel Steel (CMV)
  • Chrome Lined Bore and Chamber
  • Manganese Phosphate Barrel Finish
  • USGI Government Profile Barrels
  • HPT (High Pressure Test) Barrels
  • MPI (Magnetic Particle Inspected) Barrels
The handguard Included in the upper is the BCM KMR keymod, 10” in length. I removed the included A2 birdcage flashhider and mounted one from AAC to accommodate my suppressor. I ordered and paid for THIS ONE, but they actually shipped me THIS ONE, which costs $30 more. The light is a Streamlight PROTAC HL-X, in a BCMGUNFIGHTER 1” Ring Light Mount.

The optic is an Aimpoint T2, mounted on a BOBRO quick detach mount. The BUIS are from Troy, having tritium inserts front and rear. The vertical foregrip is a BCMGUNFIGHTER Vertical Grip Mod 3-KeyMod.

The suppressor is just plain old AAC 762-SDN-6, wrapped in a TAB Gear suppressor cover.

Initial impressions.....

With the 11.5” barrel, the rifle is nice and short and handles very well. I like the weight, although it would weigh less without the flashlight. But this is a self-defense carbine,, and the light is 1000 lumen with multiple modes, so the light stays. I didn’t want to go with an even shorter barrel because of the difficulty of suppressing higher pressure cartridges in shorter barrels. In fact, AAC won’t warrant that suppressor for barrels under 10” long. Be that as it may, the setup is noticeably lighter than my 16” carbine, using the same lower; and the shorter length moves the center of gravity back closer to the body, so it points pretty well. The whole package with the can mounted, is only an inch longer than a 16” carbine.

I won’t have a chance to take it to the range for zeroing until tomorrow. I’ll set a 25 yard zero at an indoor range, until I can get to an outdoor range later in the week. That said, my experience so far with CHM barrels from BCM is that they are very accurate for the type. My 20” A4 shoot’s 2 MOA and under with a gov’t profile barrel. This one has a gov’t profile barrel too, but being shorter, ought to be stiffer. OTH, I don’t know the velocity loss yet due to barrel length, so I’ll also chrono the rifle with M193 ball, and either 55 or 60 grain softpoints (I have both on hand). I won’t know what the effective range is until I can get some velocity information; but my guess is that it ought to be good for about 300 yards - and up close, it won’t matter.

Anyway, I’ll post some results here when I’ve had a chance to shoot it. But so far, I’m lovin’ it.

I’d say I was envious, but really I’m biased. I’ve had a similar setup for a couple years now, the 11.5” is my favorite length for SBRs as a result of this gun.

Same upper with a matching BCM lower. The KMR rail is by far my favorite on the market still. Mines wearing an Aimpoint H1 still, but that will be replaced at some point in the future as I attrite it down to another SBR.

Nice job! I love the KMR handguards too. My 10.5” .300 Blk upper has a KMR on it too. I don’t have one on my 16” upper because it has a gas piston, and the gas block won’t fit under the rail... which would shorten handguard quite a bit to make it work. So I have a Samsone handguard on that one. But if I ever convert it back to DI, I’ll put a KMR on that one too. I’m also thinking of getting a 15” KMR in FDE for my 18” DMR rifle, which has FDE receiver and buttstock (they apparently don’t offer the 17” version in FDE, or I’d go with that). My son also uses KMRs on his ARs.

Well, I had it to the range today. I didn’t do anything fancy...just zeroed the T2 at 25 yards, and got it to grouping about an inch low at that distance, shooting M193 55 grain ball. That is roughly a 50 yard zero. That’s all I was able to get done today. Next time out, I’ll shoot at the 50 yard line to confirm, but I think I’m good to go, as this is not intended as a long range weapon.

I got all the way to the range before remembering that I had left my sight adjustment tool at home for the BUIS. Shooting off the irons, POI was quite a bit high and right of the POA; but without the tool, I was kind of dead in the water. So, I just focused on getting the micro RDS zeroed, and that went pretty easily. Once I got home and had the tool, I zeroed the irons to the red dot. That should “get me on paper” with the irons on the next range trip.

I had also forgotten my Chronograph at home, so I didn’t get an actual velocity so I can put together a bullet drop table. Getting old sucks.

Despite a complete lack of magnification and my aging eyes, all 20 of the last rounds fired fell into about a 1.5-2” group, without any fliers. That’s close enough for gov’t work.

The upper functioned flawlessly, with no failures of any kind at all. Recoil, as with any AR15, is negligible. Accuracy is outstanding - particularly within longer shot strings, in which the POI doesn’t shift at ll. It seemed to shoot to the same POI whether suppressed or unsuppressed. Since the little booger is loud, I’ll be keeping the suppressor mounted.

So far, I am extremely satisfied with my purchase, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this 11.5” CHM upper assembly to anyone. As previously posted, this is my second one from BCM - the other being a 20” gov’t profile configured as an M16-A4 replica. BCM’s quality is simply outstanding. You can tell that you have a first rate product in your hands.

I’ll post more as things develop, but so far, this 11.5” is one of my two favorite ARs - the other being that 20” A4.

If you remembered to bring bullets, then you should have had a sight adjustment tool :biggrinjester:

Normally, yes, and I tried that first. But I have that “HK-type” of front sight with the semicircular leaves that curve inward, and the sight post itself is a non-standard shape - more like a pistol front sight. So it’s really hard to get to it for adjustment without the tool.
