Home defense shotguns -- how do you stow them?

Post by ecd1211 »

I'm thinking of adding a shotgun to my arsenal -- something like a Remington 870. This would be a backup to my Glock.

I know that a lot of people say that a shotgun should be your first line of home defense, but I don't know how I would make that work in my house. The advantage to the Glock is that I keep it in a GunVault on my nightstand and I can have it in my hand in a few seconds without even getting out of bed.

I don't know where I'd stow a shotgun for easy access -- the logical place would be under the bed, but my bed is pretty high off the floor, so I'd have to get down to the floor and grab it, which might not be easy in the dark. I'm also not crazy about leaving a loaded gun in such a vulnerable place -- I live alone, but sometimes have friends with kids over and the occasional cleaning service, etc., so would have to remember to put it up in those cases and then get it back out.

I'm thinking of putting some kind of bracket in the walk-in closet, hidden behind clothes.

What do those of you with shotguns in the house do to keep it handy?

Sounds like this gizmo might be right up your alley. The one thing to remember though is that no gun is safe when kids are around unless locked up or on your person, IMHO.

My EBS is on the top shelf of my closet right inside the door.

It has 3" magnum 00 buckshot in the tube, chamber empty, safety off, not cocked (firing pin released), sidecar with 6 - 00 buckshot ready.

I thought about the rack inside the door to the closet and still might one day.

I did see a gun rack on the internet that fits between the box-spring and mattress that looked pretty cool.

Some folks would say to not leave the shotgun out where burglars can get to it. If they want to stay around long enough with the alarm going off then so be it. I do not have a lot of money invested in my home defense EBS fleet. All but one were pawn shop orphans.

Edited to point out that that gizmo that Snake Doctor has linked on his post is the one I mentioned only he was faster.

If you have a closet within a few steps of your bed, one possible solution is to put the shotgun on pegs on the inside wall of the closet, above the door. That puts you in concealment (if not cover) while you retrieve the weapon, and keeps it out of reach of casual visitors and possibly even burglars.

It's assumed that you are tall enough to reach above a door easily.

My 870 graduated to primary home defense tool a short while back, I chose to store it in a bracket I found at Academy for ~ $4.00. I chose to have it lock-able, when I go to bed the lock is removed, before I go to work the lock gets put back on. Of course locks only keep out the honest, but my main concern was keeping the shotgun inaccessible to a child as the law defines it, I have a younger son (who has been raised shooting and knowing the rules) and many kiddo's in and out of the house...just in case. I may be in the minority on locking up the shotgun on the wall, but here's what I chose to do with it, the shotgun sits in the closet just two steps from the bed...

I have my Mossberg on hooks under the outer edge of my waterbed.. It's up as high as possible and cant be seen unless you have yer hear almost on the floor..Easy to reach from the bed..

However I now have an 18 month old grandson in the house alot so I need to come up with something else. We keep the door to the bedroom closed when he is there BUT it would only takes one time forgetting and he could discover its hiding place..I keep the chamber empty and safety on but he's a curious little person.

I really dont want to be fumbling with locks if I'm half asleep and need it in a hurry. I guess I need to look into one of those biometric locks I think they call them.
