I might have to become a hockey fan

Post by Vol Texan »

I’ve never really been a sports fan in general. Even before the woke nonsense ever started, I probably watched portions of only one or two games of any kind per year. I’ve just never really cared for it, I guess.

But this story makes me think I should become a hockey fan.

Bucking trends in other professional sports, not a single player kneeled during the playing of the national anthem at three different NHL exhibition games played this week.

The Philadelphia Flyers and the Pittsburgh Penguins all stood for the anthem on Tuesday.
So, instead of kneeling, the two teams chose to stand together, alternating players from the two teams. According to the article, it has happened in several games now.
Your best option for personal security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.
When those fail, aim for center mass.

Not only that, but even the Canadian Players are just as respectful to the flag... Each team has maybe one "superstar" but rarely are they ever egotistical. They realize it;s a team sport and they get paid to play, not politic.

Having spent my younger days in the great white north- I AM a hockey fan!

Thanks for this, I've given up on all sports. Maybe I'll start watching hockey.

Hockey is great. I used to play hockey. Not well, but it was fun.

It’s fun sport to watch in person. I’ve never been able
To watch it on tv and enjoy it. The hardest part for me is trying to keep up with where the puck went. It moves so fast I end up just watching the goals to see if it makes it in one

I've been a hockey fan since the days of the Houston Aeros when Gordie Howe and his two sons played here. Its a rough sport for sure with all the fighting they get into. I lived just down the street from the Summit stadium so went to many games there in my younger years. Every time a fight started they would play the Beatles song We Can Work It Out. They also announced AOL over the loud speaker a lot.

I grew up in Detroit so hockey was very popular. In the winter my dad would scrounge old lumber to make a hockey rink in the backyard. We had a lot of kids in the neighborhood who would come over a play all day long.

The first professional sports game I watched in person was the Red Wings when Gordie Howe was playing.
Sometimes I would listen to the games at night on WXYZ with my crystal radio. Good memories!

I grew up on Long Island NY, they had a minor league team the Cougars. One night a fight broke out and one of the Cougars, Curt Brackenbury, fought every guy on the other team. He went from man to man, the front of his jersey which started out white was blood red when he was done. Don't think the game ended, the police shut it down as fans where fighting too. Wild night! This was in the early 70's.

My first hockey game was at the Sam Houston Coliseum. Saw a lot of Ice Capades shows there as well. I must have been 8 years old then.

I grew up close enough to see the St. Louis Blues play (as well as the Cardinals baseball). Hockey is more exciting and fast paced and better to watch. Like Wild I'll we also played hockey during the winter.

I was saying the same thing yesterday. A few friends and I went to the Aeros a few times when you could get in for I think $5 or maybe $7. It was reasonable enough to go. I'm always chasing the puck but eventually I see it again and start the chase anew. :)

It isn't just the teams themselves. Some Canadian fans show respect for their opponent's country, too.

It is too bad, but I think that the NFL, MLB and the NBL are more concerned about sponsors, advertising, commercials, merchandising and money than about the sport or fans.

It is also interesting that the "Sport Bars" and many restaurants that have numerous TVs showing sports have been crippled by the effects of "social distancing" from COVID.
