Wait estimate??

Post by jburgess »

Hello all, I'm a new member from the DFW area. I took my CHL class on 10/6 and sent in my paperwork the next week (rec'd by DPS 10/15). I applied online and as of 11/2 my status is still "Packet Mailed to Applicant". I've been checking out the polls and posts about how long it's been taking DPS to issue recent licenses, but I have a non-standard situation...

My past five years work/residence addresses include four states, five cities, and even more individual addresses. Went to school in WV, did a long-term internship in FL, graduated and moved to NYC, worked there a few years and just moved to DFW in June. So, with the number of places I've lived and worked in the last five years, I fully expect my app to take longer than average due to the additional background checks. However, anybody have a guess as to how long EXTRA I'm looking at?

Well you're still a step a head of me as I don't take the class until Nov 11th. But from what i've read around here it can be up until 3 mos. or so until you have your plastic in hand. Also the DPS seems less than reliable on updating the "status".

After I take the class I'm just gonna mark an X on my calender 3 months ahead and forget about until then as best I can. I think that will make life a lot less stressful. A watched pot never boils and stuff like that

Yeah, I'm fully counting on them using their allotted 60 days, plus some. I'm hoping to see my plastic by the new year, but I realize my situation will likely warrant some additional time.

From reading posts around here, it sounds like 3+ weeks on average to update from the mailed status to processing status is the norm, so I'm not worried about that, just kind of wondering how long in excess of "normal" processing time I should expect due to my individual circumstances. I'm using my wait time to get used to carrying around the house. Just got my K&D Dakota Defender today and I'm breaking the P239 into it.

Have fun in the class, try to pay attention and take an active role and it will go faster. There's a lot of good information and experience to pick up on.

I was starting to get worried about the same thing. I had read on here that it can take 2-3 weeks for that status to change. My packet was received by DPS on 10/4, but finally the status changed to "processing application" on 10/29. Slightly longer than 3 weeks for me, it appears.

Any day now yours will probably change too!

Jburgess,

I was kind of worried about the same thing since I have an address in Mississippi to check. I mentioned it on another thread and 'bullseye10x' said

So it seems like this doesnt effect waiting time too badly or even at all. My guess is because they rely on the FBI check to show anything of concern that has occurred outiside of Texas.
10/23/07 - Completed package mailed to DPS
10/26/07 - Package arrives at DPS
11/29/07 - Recieved PIN via usps
01/09/08 - Still waiting on "investigative report" for background check.
02/05/08 - Issued/Active - 101 days total
