funny laws

Post by atxgun »

I was just reading over the FAQ at the end of the the ls-16.pdf document in the section "Where can I not carry my handgun".

I got a kick out of "...within 1,000 feet of the premises of an execution on the day of an execution."

Oh no! you might kill someone scheduled to be executed!

[Edit: actually after thinking about it for a second I see why that law is there]

Hard to say until you have experienced being inside of that 1000 feet with a fairly emotional crowd ;-)

Ok, one more under the FAQ section about the law not limiting to how many weapons you can carry at once. Has anyone here ever carried "Matrix style" with an arsenal under a trench coat?

That would be getting a little carried away I think.

But as a rule I can generally can be found with two on most of the time.

I have to wonder, though; how would you know? Do they post them like the "no campaigning beyond this point" signs at polling places?

I have to think the death chamber in Huntsville is at least 1,000 feet inside the prison fence.

Or is the 1,000-foot limit measured from the perimeter of the prison grounds?

This is question is purely academic. I have no intention of ever being within 100 miles of Huntsville.

That is an interesting question Jim. I would think it is from the walls, since it says the premises, but I am not positive about it. Since you cannot have one inside the walls at all, if the chamber itself is more than 1000 feet inside, it would almost have to be from the walls.

But aren't you less than 100 miles from Huntsville when you go to Houston? I guess you do that occasionally?

I guess. I didn't realize how close Huntsville is to Houston. I've never traveled by road in that direction.

I've rarely never seen a prison where you could get within 1,000 feet of the walls, except the old one in Joliet, Illinois, which was not a functioning prison.

I live in Huntsville. I have been in the death chamber (on a tour, if you must know). The death chamber is actually just inside (by about 15') of one of the exterior walls of the Huntsville (Walls) Unit. And on the day of an execution, particularly a high-profile execution, there will be no doubt when you're within 1000 feet. They are almost always media circuses, with roads blocked off for the protesters and counter-protesters. And while I've never seen them being anal enough to measure exactly, they do "measure" from the exterior wall.

The Huntsville Unit is also known as the Walls Unit, because it is not surrounded by fences like most prisons. The majority of it is enclosed behind a 25' (or so) high wall of brick, which is topped by barbed- and razor-wire and has guard pickets at every corner and several other places along the top of the walls.
Remember, in a life-or-death situation, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.
