Hunting on WMA Land

Post by GrillKing »

Anybody have any experiences with this? I've got the Public Lands Permit, blaze orange clothing and am ready to go. I'm going to take my son out squirrel hunting at Granger WMA, but wanted any input or experiences you may have on hunting public land. I've only hunted private in the past.

I figure dove would be overly crowded, but squirrel / rabbit not so much. TPWD estimates only 94 squirrel hunters last year at Granger, 10,000+ acres, about half or 2/3 is lake. Scouted it out last week and talked to the TPWD Ranger about the best areas.

Thoughts??

I've done dove hunting at Granger WMA and it was pretty painless. It was also pretty empty (but I did go late in the season and didn't get anything). Be sure to check in - you will get up to the minute information to help out.

Kalrog, thanks. Good to know it was fairly empty. TPWD estimates 523 different dove hunters and 350 different waterfowl hunters on Granger WMA last year. I figure with est 94 squirrel hunters, once we get down in the creek bottom below the dam in the pecans it will be pretty sparse people wise. On the map, looks like that section is a mile wide for 2 miles down river. Best spot according to the ranger I spoke with. I will check in with the ranger station though for the latest info.

Thanks,

Gary
