Question about hearing protection

I have been checking into electronic hearing protection, and want to get some input from everyone here.

So far I have narrowed it to the CompTachSordin Supreme Pro 3+ and the Pro Ears Pro Mag. I also hear good things about the Peltor's

Anybody use any of these, and care to share your experience?

I have as set of the low profile Peltors I purchased for hunting. They worked OK, but sometimes they would get turned on by accident when I wasn't wearing them and run down the batteries.

About a year after I bought them they developed a lot of static and had to be repaired which cost me about $50 I think. I hadn't used them much at all, at that point and it was long enough to let the warranty run out. They work fine now though. We'll see how long they last.

As far as general utility, I never had problems shooting my rifle with them. The low profile model doesn't cut out as much noise as the larger ones. If I was only going to use them on the range, I would get the bigger ones. However, you just never know. You can get the low profile model and use earplugs under them. That's what I do at the rifle range and just turn up the amps. Overall, I'm happy with them. Not happy about having to have them repaired with very little use, but maybe I got a lemon. We'll see what others have to say.

I'd really like to have the "inside the ear" amplified hearing protectors, but they are still pretty expensive.

I hear lots of good about those, but I thought that you could still get hearing damage unless you physically covered the ears?

The best hearing protection are earmuffs as they cover the entire ear.

Although earplugs alone are much better than nothing.

I wear both earmuffs and earplugs.

I haven't used any of the electronic earmuffs you've mentioned, but I hear good things about them.

It is true that you can still experience hearing damage if you don't completely cover the ear. Sound waves can also enter the ear by other means as well, like your sinus cavity. Personally I started wearing earplugs and ear muffs when I had to RO guys shooting .38 Super race guns. The blast is punishing.

The only reason I mentioned the inside the ear amplified hearing protection is because we also need hearing protection when we experience a high threat situation. It goes without saying that you may not have time to turn them on and insert them into your hears, however, there are times when you may see something coming in time or know you're going into a high-threat situation.

I was thinking these would be perfect when I go to the border with the Minutemen group. I happened to see some at Walmart I'm thinking about buying for around $36. If they still have them, I may buy them and run them through a test. Just about anything would reduce the noise some and will help save your hearing. For that price, it's worth it and Walmart is usually good about taking things back.

I have a set of the cheap Harbor Freight electronic muffs. They are on sale now for $9.99 (regular $19.99). While they may not have the best quality sound while active, they do provide for you to be able to hear much better than standard muffs. They also seem to work fairly well at blocking the over 85db sounds. If they are out of stock, Cabella's has them for $34.95 here
