Woman shot to death at front door in upscale neighborhood

NORTH RICHLAND HILLS -- A 67-year-old woman was fatally shot Sunday evening by a man who knocked on the door of her home in an upscale neighborhood in North Richland Hills, police said.
The woman, whose identity was not available late Sunday, died at about 8 p.m. at the scene in the 8400 block of Spence Court, which is near the border with Keller.
The woman's husband told police that the couple was watching television alone in the house when an unknown person knocked, said investigator Larry Irving, a police spokesman.
The wife answered the door. The husband told investigators that's when he heard three or four shots, Irving said.
The husband said he found his wife bleeding in the foyer, Irving said.
The husband said he did not see the assailant, but a neighbor saw a man in a hooded sweatshirt flee in a gold-colored vehicle, Irving said. The witness could not see whether the man was driving.
Investigators were at the scene late Sunday evening as neighbors watched from their windows.
"We don't have anything right now to indicate a motive," Irving said.

Maybe she was the victim of a mistaken identity knock-and-shoot assassination in an upscale neighborhood where the shooter shot the wrong 67 year old woman.
Maybe the shooter is just plain crazy and did it for the thrill.
I suppose it could have been anything. I have heard stories about gang initiations where a potential member has to kill someone but I can't remember ever hearing of an actual incident where they drove to an upscale neighborhood and knocked on the door and then shot a random person. Most often a killer and their victim are connected in some way (by first or third person association). Random stranger on stranger homicide is extremely rare, especially in a scenario like the one described where the victim is specifically targeted (as opposed to being an innocent bystander).
I am interested to hear more about this story, the initial news story was very brief and offered almost no details.
Maybe the killer was the 5th suspect in Hemizygote's robbery who escaped out the back door.
Ah'm thinking this: attempted robbery/home invasion goes wrong. the old lady starts fighting with the assailant outside, or in the foyer, but the hubby doesn't hear the commotion (quite possible, 'specially if you're not paying attention and watching the picture tube), lady gets capped (cause she's holding onto the assailant, or because she's seen his face), hubby comes a'runnin' and finds her in a mess.

Down here in the ro grande valley home invasions happen frequently , I put a peephole in my door and i have a handgun stuffed in a chair i grab as i walk up to the door even tho i usually carry 24-7 i hide the gun behind my leg til i can see everything is kosher . But i just thought i need to get a chain latch to put on door to slow down anybody trying toforce their way in when they hear the deadbolt turn , this forum can make you aware of chinks in your armor .

Heard a story about this incident on the radio as I drove through the D/FW area today. It's a legit story, but they didn't have/give any more details, either.
Those door chains often won't even slow someone down. When I was about 11, I was at someone else's house who had put the chain on. I didn't know this as I opened the door to leave. I was hit in the chest by a piece of the chain as I opened the door, but I hardly felt any resistance to getting the door open. I suggest finding a way to make sure things are kosher before unlocking the deadbolt.

Wow, that wasnt far from where I used to live. Anyway, Im with a few others here, something just doesnt sound right with this one? Either way, I used to answer the door with my 45 pressed against the door in anticipation that someone is going to try and get in. Now that my door is a left hand open I am not to sure of myself with my weak hand grip and aim, now I just keep it behind my leg if I answer the door at all.
