WRT the Richland Hills Shooting. I work with a fellow that lives a block over. I don't know what went wrong with the first lady, but they hit a few doors down, took the woman to the ground and had her top open when the daughter walks in. The say "<blank>, she has a kid and leaves." They then try again a day or so later but the lady calls the PD and doesn't open the door. Unknown if all related but the victims were all women alone or could have been presumed alone, all within a couple of blocks of each other. My friend's wife is packing around the house now. Also be aware that my chronology may be messed up, I'm not a very good interviewer.

I have heard stories about gang initiations where a potential member has to kill someone but I can't remember ever hearing of an actual incident where they drove to an upscale neighborhood and knocked on the door and then shot a random person. That's possibly the best way to get caught I can think of.LarryH wrote:Or it could have been a gang initiation ritual.Odin wrote:
Maybe the shooter is just plain crazy and did it for the thrill.
Suspending judgment, waiting for more information.
Maybe the killer was the 5th suspect in Hemizygote's robbery who escaped out the back door.
Maybe someone took the advice of Quannell Obama and went to River Oaks to "shoot some white folk"

Re: Don't Answer the Door Unarmed
We live on the SE side of Houston, in what "seems" a very safe little town. I'm home most days during the day and have had some really scary folks come to our door claiming that they are "from our electric co.; need assistance; aren't selling anything, but they want my help; etc.," you name it. Since this became a Sanctuary City and our illustrious City Council now allows door-to-door solicitation, we've had a lot of nut cases at our door. We have had lawn men kick in the door of an 80 year old woman, rob and rape her. I've been accosted by my lawn man in my back yard and another man in the Ladies' Room of the Dollar Cinema ... both illegals. A couple of weeks ago, about a half dozen lawn men were going into at Wal-Mart after dark. One of them nodded toward me and said to his companions, "Gringo Senora." One of the guys said, "No. No bueno. No bueno." A neighbor's daughter, at the same Wal-Mart, was almost stolen by a coyote, but an alert Security Guard tackled the bad guy and saved the little girl, who would have ended up in Mexico making cocaine and having a very short life-span. The police told the mother not to say anything, as they were watching these evil men. I believe that attitude is what causes the mis-perception that this is a safe area. It is getting really dangerous out there, at home and away.
I cut the hedges down that hid my front door from the street and put in a door with a clear leaded glass window. I keep my gun on the half wall next to the front door. When I realize that it is a stranger at the door, I make it obvious through that glass that I have a gun in my hand, BEFORE I ask, "Who is it? What do you want?" In fact, the last time, I held the gun up to the window. The guy ran off. That oughta tell us something!
Well, a door-to-door salesman complained to local police that a homeowner (not me) answered the door with a gun in his hand in another neighborhood. The Police told him, "tough boogers," or something to that effect. It is not against the law to answer the door with a gun in your hand, and I hope it scares them off. Maybe, they won't come back. I have no intent on shooting anyone. However, I do want them to know, clearly, that I will not allow them to harm me. At 61, I'm obviously at an age that bad guys like to target.
The really neat thing to come out of all of this is that so many of the women that I know around here are arming themselves and learning to shoot and enjoying their new hobby. So, the bad guys have created a whole new group of gun enthusiasts, and we're having a ball! Such a deal.......

Nope!jrosto wrote:If you must answer the door:
Please don't lead with your chin. Someone kicking in that door is going to take you out. Your forward foot should be firmly planted behind the door, rear foot a full step straight behind, and upper body centered.
While this angle doesn't show it clearly, the door is open 3 inches, and my left leg is in solid contact with in from the edge of my foot, up my calf, to my knee. My weight (and head) are centered between my feet. I can see by tilting my head slightly forward. Both knees are bent, and with a quick lunge I can slam my full weight against the door.

Just by way of disclaimer, I don't typically answer the door this way.
But after dark, or after any suspicious activity? You bet!

Good points KB, thanks.
A black and white video intercom can be had for under $150.00. If you add a motion detector porch light and a decent dead bolt and lock set you can answer the door without the security risk of opening it.
