I actually went and met the guy, being the crazy dude I am.
Turns out he's a young man that got in trouble in high school for, uhm, being in a car with a girl that was one year below the age of consent.

He's married with a kid now, but still on the registry. I'm not worried about the guy at all.
(He gave me info to actually verify his story) He was actually a nice enough guy.

not trying to defend anyone, but yea, anyone busted for things like that are on there. They aren't all violent sexual preadators.

It's a great idea to use all the information you can gather to be aware of your environment. However, these registries are imperfect. Only a fraction of real sex offenders are registered. These registries also contain people who foolishly pled guilty to false charges during a nasty divorce, and some false positives (innocent person with the same name as an offender).

Most sexual assaults are carried out by relatives and acquaintances, particularly unmarried mothers' "boyfriends." Don't invite the wolf inside.

http://www.familywatchdog.us is a great site as well... it integrates a map really well. If I had a family and the kids were old enough to understand I'd sit down with them and view or go over all offenders in my area, ESPECIALLY the ones that had involved a child in their previous act, which is at least 75% of them it seems.

This country needs some serious sex crime reform. The whole business about being 18 and "committing illegal acts" with your 17 yr old gf is just ridiculous. And then there's this case:

I'm not blind to the reasons that registries were set up, but I have a real problem with the 'guilty for life' end result.

I have always believed in the 'pay your debt' and start over concept.

That may still happen if you're just convicted of killing someone, but not if you're convicted of a sex crime.

But are you sure that every person convicted in a "true sexual preadator"? What about the ridiculous example given above?

If the science was advanced enough to separate repeat offenders, I wouldn't object.

I'd wager a good double digits percent of people here could have been tagged for something similar in their youth. I feel bad for that fellow.

Agreed, there are differences...like that fellow above. but When I see a 40 year old man living in my area who had sex with a 9 year old? I'm not going to forgiveness on that stuff.

I couldn't agree more! But how about a 17YO having consensual relations with his 16YO girlfriend?

Should that be treated the same?

Does it warrant branding for life as a sexual predator?

I would like to see a list/map of those who have been convicted of violent and property crimes. I am much more likely to be the target of their illegal activities than I am to be the target of a kid who had sex with his 16 year old girl friend.

I'd agree with this. Or perhaps a registry of people on probation for violent crimes, or recidivists.

I'd like to see them expire off the registry after they serve their terms, for property crimes, or 5-10 years of clean living for recidivists.

As far as Sex offenders, i'd rather see the list like it is for violent predators, and true non-consensual sexual acts. I'd prefer to have a judge decide, than have the law mandate it. As someone who's armed, and who'se wife knows how to take care of herself, I'm not terribly worried. If I had children, I might feel different though.
