I am for just about anything that starts people thinking.

Many have to start with tiny baby steps and it may take years before they achieve a reasonable state of awareness. That, of course, assumes a significant event doesn't occur in the interim to give them a nasty dose of reality (i.e. mugging, rape, assault, etc...).

Great. Is anyone teaching these women what to do after the tase stops and the bad guy gets up, now REALLY irritated? Or teaches them that a TASER against a deadly weapon is foolish and stupid?

Tasers are best employed by people working with backup.

Im sure a rape from a REALLY irritated piece of trash is just as bad from one who isn't irritated. Also, I dont think the piece of trash would be getting up if he was tazered in the neck. Shock him with one hand and then pepper gel his eyes with the other.

It would be better if she were giving GLOCK parties! The all new, improved, and much more dependable Tupperware!

Such an idea... maybe I should work on getting that FFL, after all.

I also don't understand the big interest in citizen Tazers. While they make a good offencive weapon for LEOs intent on persuading some cooperation on their victims. Its not as effective a defensive weapon as good ole pepper spray. Pepper spray might even be effective against deadly force, it at least provides a reasonable chance to escape. Criminals might find the Taser interesting because of the Tasers offencive capabilitys great for street side robberys etc. But I can't see how Tasers generally would be more effective defensively than a $8.00 can of spray.
Of course I think of pepper sauce as a suplement to to a handgun. Tasers as a great tool forr LEOs .
While crimminals might find them useful, its difficult to see them as more effective than pepper spray. I understand that sometimes pepper spray is not always effective. The Taser is guarenteed to only be effective for only a few seconds.

Criminals occasionally use Tasers. Tasers cost so much, the criminal could hardly repay the cost with an armed robbery of a person walking the street. It's also my understanding that only registered buyers of the original Taser can buy replacement cartridges.

I don't know much about Tasers; please excuse my ignorance. (I have two stun guns, which require body contact and can be used until the batteries run out.)

It seems that I've heard/read that a taser can be fired ONLY ONCE. Is this true? If so, I would be hesitant to encourage another woman to pack one. Since so many criminals seem to run in pairs or packs, this would be insufficient. There's also the chance of missing since it would be a stressful situation. I'm afraid it might give the person carrying it a false sense of security.

Despite my concerns about the Taser, I'm glad this woman has other women thinking about their safety. So many women that I meet simply don't want to confront this possibility.

First off, all I know of tasers is from seeing them used on "Cops" on TV. So I make no claim to be an expert of any kind.

But what I have noticed is that as soon as the cop releases the switch, the BG who has just been Tasered recovers immediately. It doesn't seem to matter where they have been Tasered. When the juice gets turned off they are more or less back to normal.

And the pepper spray follow up, while still keeping the Taser on of course, seems like it would take a lot of practice to execute. Not to mention that some people (drugged, or those who have developed or have a tolerance) seem to lap up pepper spray like candy.

Pepper spray itself can be a useful less-than-lethal weapon in some scenarios.

But for me, Tasers are strictly for when backup is available.

If I remember correctly you also carry pepper spray. Do you see a tactical advantage to stun gun over pepper spray or a CCW? Would you encourage anyone to carry a stun gun or Taser rather than pepper spray?

Yes, I also carry pepper spray. I have this for any occasion that I'm not certain DF is an option, but still think I could be in danger. (Let's face it, you suffer much lesser consequences for spraying someone with OC than shooting them.) Since I have asthma and outdoor winds might not always favor me, there could be a possiblity that I go straight to the gun where others might rely on the OC first. I've stopped carrying my stun gun, since it is limited to physical contact, but am not opposed to taking it up again if I ever thought it might be beneficial.

When another woman talks to me about self-defense (which, unfortunately, isn't often), I encourage her to use what's best for her. I showed a few women at church the stun gun; it freaked them out. One of these women, however, sent off for her CHL on her 21st birthday. She's comfortable with a gun, but not hand-to-hand combat with a thug. (Can't say I blame her.) It isn't often that I run across other women that want to address their self-defense concerns. When I do, they seem to favor the gun over anything else. I don't know if they're picking that up from me, or if they come to this conclusion on their own.

At our church, more women are starting to get CHLs and carry. I suspect we now equal the armed men in our church, and I find that encouraging. One woman has taken me into the RR after church on two separate occasions to show me a new carry piece, and has asked me a few times about concealed carry options. (She borrowed a few holsters and belly bands to try out while waiting on her plastic.) NONE of these women (of which I am aware) are carrying OC or a stun gun in addition to this.
