Thought you'd all find this interesting

The whole story is pretty amazing. Thank God her friend gave her that gun. It's amazing to me that there are politicians out there who think she shouldn't have been armed.

The audio is pretty chilling as well.

Just another example of when seconds count the police can be there in minutes.

Glad it truned out OK for the lady. The article said he was shot three times in the abdomen. He was still attacking her after bing shot. It goes to show that you need to hit vital organs to stop someone quicker.

Your point?
I think the idea is that there are times when "minutes" can be way too long to wait for help, which is why we do well to be able to help ourselves.

That when seconds count only "YOU" can protect yourself. If she had not had the gun to save her own life in the few minutes it took for the police to arrive she could very well could have been a a few lines in the local papers obituary the next day. It's not meant as any disrespect towards the police but, even the worlds best response time sometimes isn't enough to save a life.

I think we should move on. I took no offense at TXI's statement.

Getting back on the original discussion, very intense 911 tape. Great thread! Brings the reality home.

I had a couple of thoughts. The lady was reasonably prepared and took the proper steps to protect herself.

While it was important to call 911, the operator wasn't much help. 4 minutes into the phone conversation, the police still had not arrived, and the operator mistakenly said it had only been 2 minutes. The operator did not give any advice as far as barring the door, escape, or taking cover. The 911 operator mostly seemed to be a distraction... the lady was being attacked and shooting the stalker while the operator is asking all kinds of questions. Fighting for your life is hard enough without being asked 20 questions during the process. While the operator (this time) did not tell the lady to put her gun down, the operator cautioned the lady about shooting. If the lady had hesitated, due to the operator's cautioning, it could have cost her life. Putting the gun down could have also cost the lady her life.

The police showed up to the house pretty quick, about 6 minutes into the call, but still 1 minute after the shooting was over. The stalker breaking into the room and the shooting itself took less than 30 seconds.

Hopefully the lady can soon put this all behind her and get on with her life.

I think that 911 operators are probably much better equipped to handle medical, fire, and traffic emergencies than this type of police emergency. In a medical emergency the operator can offer first aid instructions, assure and calm the caller, prevent panic, etc. Handling a home invasion type call is much different. You can't really advise someone to shoot or not shoot over the phone!

I know she was distraught, but this stood out to me: when police got there, she was in the front yard, while the attacker was dead (or dying) in the bedroom, and her gun was on the bed.

Clearly not smooth. She is very lucky he didn't grab and and shoot her outside.
