Sig X-Five
I've been looking for a good 9mm to compete in IDPA (I chose 9mm because I could actually afford to practice with it) I really like the idea of getting a nice Les baer for Ed Brown in a .45 but the cost of the ammo/gun is edging me away from them. My friend bought a X-five, I have no idea which model, but he said he paid like $1500 for it. Well he is getting shipped off to England and wants to get rid of most of his guns before he goes, so he is selling them pretty cheap, I could probably get it for $1100 or so.
Now, I LOVE my Sig's but I have yet to run into anyone that has shot, owned or even seen an x-five. Sig claims a sub 2" group at 50 yards with one (not that I could shoot anywhere near that) and I am really hoping you guys have a little experience with this weapon. Also, if not the X-Five then does anyone have any suggestions on a nice high-cap 9mm? I am not looking to go too cheap on the gun itself, but at the same time I'm not sure I can justify spending $2k on a very nice 1911.(though, the 1911 fever has a hold of me BAD)

Re: Sig X-Five
I know nothing about the X-5 but I do know that Sig makes One Heckuva Good gun.
I would like to say tho.....If you have the 1911 fever you must get you one.....or 5....because you probably wont get rid of the fever till you do. It is a very nice and fun platform and the ablility to be customized is ONLY limited by your wallet.
The cost of ammo is cheap if you get into reloading. I can load 45acp for about $4.30 per 50 (with free brass). That is cheaper than factory 9mm. Not to mention that you will have a great hobby that will clear your mind of the daily grind......being that you MUST focus on loading and nothing else.

gitcha a HiPower. it's 1911-esque, is indeed a 9mm, and are spoda be great to shoot with.

FWIW, IIRC, AFAIK, FTMP, IANAL. YMMV.

SRVA and I have been running S&W M&P's in 9 and 45. They shoot great and are reliable. As to your gun deal. Get it! If you don't like it you can always sell it. Otherwise keep it for your collection. It's a shame to pass up a good deal if you can afford it.

Re: Sig X-Five
When I saw the first model at the 2005 SHOTShow, there was only the one .40S&W model with wood grips and a magwell...The sticker price was $2500. It was nice, but I personally didn't think it was THAT nice. Now you've got lower priced X-Five models like the Competition, Tactical and Allround but all carry a $1600 or MSRP. If you can get one for $1100 or so, it might be worthy opportunity. If nothing else, you should at least be able to make a profit should you decide to sell it later. Personal experience says it's a good buy at the price you described if you really want a Sig X-Five. The practical guy in me says buy a Glock, Smith&Wesson M&P or if you must, a Springfield XD. All cost significantly less than an X-Five and provide more than adequate accuracy and reliability in the real world. I'd argue the M&P and Glock offer greater mechanical accuracy than 99% of the people using them can achieve. Still, those guns lack the "cool factor" of the Sig X-Five.AFJailor wrote:I've been looking for a good 9mm to compete in IDPA (I chose 9mm because I could actually afford to practice with it) I really like the idea of getting a nice Les baer for Ed Brown in a .45 but the cost of the ammo/gun is edging me away from them. Personal experience with the X-Five is as follows...I found the Karl Nill wood grips that Sig uses on the original X-Five and some other models make already excessively fat grips, even worse. I actually prefer the slightly thinner plastic grips used on the X-Five Competition and lower X-Five models much better. The beavertail really lets you get high on the gun and I like that a lot. If you are a heavy 1911 shooter, the Sig trigger leaves a lot to be desired. But from perspective of a Sig shooter, the trigger pretravel is unusually short. The break is crisp in comparison to regular production SIg pistols and for a competition gun, I think I'd like it even lighter. The thing about the trigger that sells the X-Five above nearly all other Sigs for me is the reset. When the hammer has been cocked by the slide, traditional Sig triggers have a funky reset that requires an unnecessarily long trigger return stroke for starters. And worse, once you feel the click of the gun "catching the link," the trigger goes slack bumping the sear on followup shots. This irritating "feature" was a result of the linkages for the firing-pin block. Sig shortened the reset significantly in the X-Five. The result is the shooter is no longer tripped up by the trigger resetting and then going slack until you re-engage the sear. I think the lessons learned lead to the SAS triggers now offered in other Sig pistols.
When you take the time out of your day to beat someone, it has a much longer lasting effect on their demeanor than simply shooting or tazing them.

Thanks for your input guys, and GC as always your very informative. I dont know if I can shake the 1911 fever so I will most likely order a Baer or Ed Brown. I as well think the grips on pretty much all sigs are too wide, thats why I put Hogue grips on both of mine.

Unfortunately, you wouldn't be able to use the X-5 in IDPA. There are four X-5 models, and three of them won't make weight for IDPA, and the fourth won't fit in the box. That said, I could get one in mint condition for $1,100, I probably would.

Re: Sig X-Five
What he said. The X5 is too big for IDPA competition, per their rules. The Tac might make it with some minor adjustments--I'd have to compare specs to remember what it needed. I think a non-ambi safety would get it under the width, but don't remember about the length.
That said, I own an X5 Competition in 9mm and it's the best handgun I've ever shot. Period.
The trigger is fantastic and the gun is very well balanced. Expect to pay about $1500 NIB.
The Tactical and All Around are great guns as well, although the AA has been discontinued buy Sig, and last I checked, they only had 30 left in .40--none in 9mm. Expect to pay about $1300 NIB.
If you're in the Dallas area and would like to try it out, let me know. I'm always looking for an excuse to hit the range.
BTW, I'm also a Sig dealer.

Right on the safety (or shave a bit off each side of the ambi safety) and the beavertail needs to be chopped to make length.zeroskillz wrote:What he said.
