Scary situation...no more waiting around
Ok, first off let me say that I love my girlfriend, she is by far the best thing that has ever happened to me, and at this point we’re both agreed that once I finish up my masters degree in May we’ll be ready to take the big plunge as it were.
Here’s what scares me though. Last Monday night/ Tuesday morning I woke up at about 3 am shaking. I was freezing, which was weird because I was in pajama pants and under the covers. I’m shivering so much that I’ve woken her up and now she’s concerned. So in fear that I may have a bad fever she decides to go to the local 24 hour CVS to get a thermometer to see how bad it is.
As she walks into the store she said she didn’t notice anything unusual, but upon returning to the register, she sees two men behind the counter. At the same time an employee is shouting for her, as well as another employee standing close to her, to come to the office. It’s at this point that she realizes the two males behind the counter are hurriedly throwing boxes of cigarettes into trash bags.
Luckily she, along with the two employees, makes it to the office and lock the door while calling the police. Less than 30 seconds later the men are gone. Get this; both employees just act like nothing happened! Upon questioning them, they told my girlfriend that it happens all the time, and that they’re almost used to it.
So to get to the CHL part of the story, she’s been shooting with me for more than a year now and has gotten pretty familiar with most of my handguns. Recently she spoke with my mom and the two agreed that they’d like to take the CHL class together. So, at this point I’m thinking it’s more than worth my money to pay the class & state fee for both of them.
Now, even had I been there in this situation, I wouldn’t have pulled my gun on the men unless they threatened me (which I told her). However, being that they would have been between me and the door, I probably would have gone to the office as she did, but you better believe that I’d have my hand on the gun once I got out of their sight.
So, long story short, I got sick, and it put my girlfriend in harm’s way. I’m not going to put off on getting her into a class. And at the same time I think it’s time she and I went gun shopping for her. Don’t forget that you might not always be around/with your significant other, and if you love them, make sure they know how to use a gun or other weapon should the need arise.

I'm guessing he did, but maybe not right then; I had a similar problem just before Christmas.txinvestigator wrote:Did you have a fever?
I think the aftermath was worse than the main stage of the illness: washing down BC headache powders with TheraFlu is really nasty.

I guess you realize how dire this situation was. The odds are not good for people in a back room during a robbery.SigM4 wrote:As she walks into the store she said she didn’t notice anything unusual, but upon returning to the register, she sees two men behind the counter. You already know the right course of action; and I wish both of you a long, happy life.

Lol, actually yes. It broke fairly quickly, but as was mentioned, I've been dealing with all the drainage out of my nose for the rest of the week. Not cool...txinvestigator wrote:Did you have a fever?
I guess the one good thing I can say that came from the incident though is that it seems to have motivated my girlfriend, both my parents, and some family friends to all take the step of obtaining a CHL. I guess it takes a scare sometimes to get people motivated, though it shouldn't...

Some people need a personal, highly emotional event to make them realize that it's not a Disney world we live in.SigM4 wrote: I guess it takes a scare sometimes to get people motivated, though it shouldn't...

It is a Small World though (now, try to get that song out of your heads!!)fm2 wrote: Some people need a personal, highly emotional event to make them realize that it's not a Disney world we live in.

It really does take a wake-up call for some folks. Everyone is different, so one method is not going to work for everyone. Some wake up slowly and others have a nightmare awaken them.
I am glad this was an awakening and no one was injured in the process.

My wife used to be a shift manager working nights at a CVS here in Houston. Half the cameras didn't work and folks "crashed" it all the time doing small time grab & run thefts. It is basically the store policy to not prosecute small time stuff like that because it costs more than it's worth.SigM4 wrote:she decides to go to the local 24 hour CVS to get a thermometer
Of course, taking thousands of dollars in cigarettes is another matter.
From time to time I would get out of bed and take a drive to check things out. Luckily, we have lots of LEO's in our church who work the night shift and would always stop by several times a night to make sure all was ok.

Maybe it's because I'm closer to being a Nurse Cratchet than a Florence Nightengale, but there's no way in God's green earth I would go to an all night pharmacy for a thermometer. I probably wouldn't even go for tylenol. If my husband had a fever, he'd have to tough it out for a few hours OR if he were that sick, we'd go to the hospital.
If proved to be a "wake up call" for you both, that's a good thing. Getting a CHL is a good thing, but personal protection doesn't always mean carrying a gun. If this were my daughter in the story, I'd be playing the Mama Card and would be all over her for putting herself in that situation in the first place.

Glad that you are feeling better sig and thanks for posting this. At first when I read that you woke up so cold, I began to think you were indicating a window or door had been opened which may have lead to a story about an 'unwanted house guest'! My wife of 4 months recently decided to obtain her chl as well and will be taking a class towards the end of the month. I suppose no specific, personal event has triggered this decision to apply but I would definitely credit the folks here who share their personal experiences and the discussions which follow as credence to her realizations. It is certainly true that we cannot always be available in person to protect our loved ones. That is just an unfortunate truth. What we can do by engaging in frequent, open discussions about safety, preparedness, and self awareness offers the best chances that we remain as vigilant as possible.
