New Beretta PX4 40 cal today from the Reliant Show

Post by shipwreck »

I picked up a Beretta PX4 in 40 cal this morning (at the Houston Reliant Gunshow). Got it for $399 + tax. In my area, my local shop had it for $520, and Academy wanted $498 for one.

I have never owned a 40 cal before. I have prev put 1 mag thru a 40 cal PX4 in July 2006 - during the Beretta range day. At the time - I thought the recoil was very light. The only other 40 cal I have I have shot was a Walther P99 in 40 cal.

I fired 200 rounds thru my PX4 - I REALLY like it. It is very accurate. Now, I am used to shooting 200-250 rounds of 9mm when I go. At the 150 mark with the 40 cal, my hand was getting a little sore (not that bad, but noticable). And, shooters fatigue was setting in, because my grouping was not as good. Maybe I am a wuss - but remember, I've never fired this many rounds of 40 cal before.

Typically, when I start to get "shooter's fatigue" (from shooting too many rounds - I start shooting low. And, that's what I did after a while. And, when I finished up shooting 50 rounds thru my HK USPc 9mm to test out a new mag spring - I could see I had the same pattern - so it as me..

But, I am very happy with the PX4 purchase. I like the gun a lot. I may stick to just firing 100 rounds thru it on a typical range session - at least for a while. But, I enjoyed it.

No problems whatsoever. And, in fact, at the show, I bought 2 extra extended mags. So, I have 4 mags now.

Only neg I can say - which isn't even that big of a deal - the front sight dot gets dirty pretty fast. I had to wipe it down a couple of times - to see it clearly at my dark, indoor range.

Nice looking pistol. I would agree that the .40 will wear you down a little quicker. I have a Sig Pro in .40 and a USP in 9mm. The Sig is just a bit more robust.

Not to be a jerk, but your picture is of a pistol that is cocked, off safe and with a magazine in place. That is the condition it should be in when it is pointed downrange at a target. It's the little things that show responsibility in exercising our 2A rights.

Enjoy the pistol. Be safe.

Honestly - the gun is unloaded - and I had it cocked to try to get a slight view of the skelotonized hammer.

And, I never use the safties on any of my guns. This one happens to act as a decocker - so,, I use it for that. But many of my guns don't even have a safety. So, I don't usually leave the safety "on" - on the rest of them...

Congrats, Shipwreck.......great pistol!! The mag extensions are a great option for the PX4 platform. I know it's a definite must have for the .45 model. You may see that front sight paint chip out soon. I have yet to see a PX4 that will retain that superluminova paint the factory puts in. I replaced it with plain white sight paint. Not a huge deal and it's really the only thing about the pistol that I can fault. I put over 7000 rounds through my 9mm PX4 and am looking forward to getting another to run through its paces.

You can convert that to a G model (decock only) which I'm sure you're aware of already. I don't like safeties unless it's a open carry pistol.

Thanks for the info on the paint. I kinda thought I may eventually have to do that... I've had to repaint the front sight on a comped 1911 years ago - because of the blast from the comp. So, no big deal...

When the 45 PX4 has been out longer, and they release the colored frame version, I may have to get one of those too...

I find that the DA pull on the PX4 feels like there is already a "D" spring in it :coolgleamA:
