According to the latest info from the DPS Handgun Branch, there were 1,639 active Texas CHL instructors as of 31 Dec 07. I puttered around the DPS website for awhile but was unable to find an answer to this question:
How many Texas CHL instructors are also Texas law enforcement officers?
Anyone have any idea? I know of two, personally, but I suspect there are many more...

Re: Statistical Question about CHL Instructors
I'm not aware of it if DPS even has a way to break out the numbers that way. But, having been in the original school in '95 and renewal schools every 2 years since, I'd guess it's pushing 50%, especially if including "ex" LEOs too ...

As an instructor, does DPS actually track what your other occupation is? I have not seen the application for instructor, so just curious if they know, and then if they keep it as a statistic?

They ask occupation for the CHL so I would think they do. I am sure an instructor will post soon.Keith B wrote:As an instructor, does DPS actually track what your other occupation is? I just thought of another question. Does a CHL instructor have to take a seperate class to get their CHL?

Re: Statistical Question about CHL Instructors
It's been so long since I filled out the instructor application, I can't remember what all it asked.
No, instructors do not have to take another class for personal CHL. But we do have to pay the same fees as everyone else.

Re: Statistical Question about CHL Instructors
That's kind of what I suspected, and I had hoped that an instructor who had been going to the classes for a long time would pipe up. Thanks! It would not surprise me a whole lot of MOST CHL instructors are or have been LEOs at some point.Greybeard wrote:I'm not aware of it if DPS even has a way to break out the numbers that way. What got me to thinking about it was some inane comments appended to a story I found on a newspaper's website, about the some state's legislature considering CHL carry on state college campuses. One of the lesser lights commented, paraphrasing, "concealed carry is a bad thing, just ask any law enforcement officer." I giggled/harrumphed (garrumphed?), knowing that my CHL instructor was an active cop, and I know of several others, personally and indirectly. That got me to wondering if DPS kept stats and posted them. Apparently if they keep them, they don't post them, as far as occupation goes.
Thanks all.

Re: Statistical Question about CHL Instructors
If I remember from my initial instructor training, if you had a POST certification, then you could take an abbreviated course to become a CHL instructor. 28 hours instead of 40. That is the only way I think they would be able to track if you were a LEO.
