Gun in Car on College Campus

Post by speedlace »

I am a CHP holder in Louisiana, and I will be driving to a tournament in Houston this weekend at the University of St. Thomas.

In Louisiana, guns aren't allowed on college campuses;
BUT the state sees your vehicle as an extension of your home, which allows people to keep a firearm in their automotive while on a college campus.

Is there a law(s) similar that would allow me to keep the gun in my car while on campus in Houston or will I just have to leave my firearm back in Louisiana?

I think you safe on this. There are many forum members here that are teachers through the DFW ISD and they keep theirs locked up inside their vehicle. I'm a college student myself and before I enter inside the campus building, I disarm myself and keep it locked up inside my vehicle.

In Texas, you can have a weapon in your car on a college campus unless the university is private (as St. Thomas is) and the perimeter of the campus is posted with 30.06 signs. I have no information about the latter.

Russell wrote:... an educational institution that is a PUBLIC educational institution (such as Sam Houston State University) cannot post legally binding 30.06 signs since they are considered a governmental entity?
Correct.

However, some public entities do post 30.06 signs and some police agencies have said that they will enforce them. This situation will not be corrected until there is an attorney general opinion or an appeals court ruling.

I don't know what's going on here. I posted a reply which Russell obviously read, but it's gone now.

Jim, I see a total of three posts by you in this thread.

Should there be more?

Ah, yes, the one about one government entity fining another, and the futility thereof, seems to be missing.
