Date of a Smith&Wesson Model 36

Post by AEA »

Hope someone has a reference of serial numbers for Model 36's.
I just picked up a used Mod 36, 2" Nickel Chief's Special in .38 Special.
It has been through several hands, but fired little. Not even any hint of a cylinder ring!

I am hoping someone might be able to date this gun for me.
The serial number is J9794XX.

Thanks!

If you don't mind me asking, how were you able to find out the year manufactured? Is there a website with the serial #'s, year manufactured, etc?

Jim Supica's Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson has a date list. It agrees with the 1982 date.

There is a Web Site....but no list.
THR (thehighroad) and in their Revolvers section there is a guy called "Old Fuff" who is quite knowledgeable. He has over 11,000 posts (so, no Life..... ) and has access to the book mention above as well as others. :txflag:
