PICS of HER new Springer and.....

Post by Target1911 »

Springer Champion. Took it to the range today. She noticed that it had MORE recoil than my 5" Kimber. Only probs were several FTEs on my lighter reloads. I think I need to get a lighter recoil spring. The one on it feels very stiff.

....My new (to me) Ruger Blackhawk I got from Highvelocity.
Wow this thing is SOOOOO much fun to shoot.

The shorter the barrel on a 1911, the stiffer the recoil spring needs to be. I'd just bump up your loads a little bit. I have a Champion as well, and I won't put "super-light" loads through it for just that reason. Because it uses a dual-spring setup, I'd hesitate to trim the recoil spring.

Nice Ruger. I've got one in .45 Colt that's an absolute hoot (my last batch of handloads chronyed an average of 1275 fps with a 250g Hornady XTP out of a 5" barrel).

Nice Springer and I'm glad you're enjoying the Blackhawk. Does that Springer have the dual recoil spring setup? SA made them both with the dual spring/2 piece rod setup AND a GI type guide rod with a reverse plug. I've owned both types.
I am scared of empty guns and keep mine loaded at all times. The family knows the guns are loaded and treats them with respect. Loaded guns cause few accidents; empty guns kill people every year. -Elmer Keith. 1961

She did say...."it may take a little time but I think I can get used to the recoil." Oh well.....if she doesnt, that just means I have a new pistola.

And yeah, The Ruger is tons of fun to shoot.

HV.....i need to bring it over some day so you can show me how to DEEP CLEAN it.

Target, what ammo is she shooting to break it in ? Sometimes switching practice ammo can help a little. Also maybe a different recoil rod for that two spring set up-- maybe a tungsten one? I'm thinking a little bit more mass up front will tame the recoil. That, and get her out having fun with it will do wonders! :biggrinjester:

My Springer has a dual spring also. When it was brand new, the action was very stiff. After putting a few hundred rounds through it, it lightened up noticeably. If the Champ is new, just put some factory rounds through it and the situation should improve.

I got the gun used but it doesnt look to be used all that much.
The rounds that gave me problems were some of my lighter loads. I shot it tonight at the IDPA match and didnt have one problem.......with the gun that is. :smilelol5: It ran like a CHAMP....ion. I was still using my reloads but they are a little hotter than the problem ones (they were left over from looking for THAT load)
