I'm not sure I understand your question. If you mean "what is legal to carry," then the answer is any handgun you can legally own. It must be concealed, so the handgun version of an AR-15 would be legal, but difficult to conceal in anything less than a trench coat.

If you mean "what guns can I use to take the CHL course," then it's any revolver or semi-automatic 32 caliber or above.

The reason is, while you see many qualification targets with one large hole it the center, it has been made with 50 rounds fired, NOT ONE!! "rlol"

I want to see the target after someone qualifies with a Taurus Judge with shotshells.

Some friends have both "Judges" and combo. .45/.410 long arms.
I have developed some self defense loads using 4, .34 and 3, .38 cast balls in brass .410 cases.
I have tested the loads in my open choke .H&R topper and am getting 2-3 " groups at 15 yds, I would expect these to take out 2 or 4 legged critters up to 400 lbs, recoil is acceptable.

Chaplin, Is this the defense weapon of choice for you? Although it is legal to carry a firearm of this nature, as a CHL holder one needs to consider the firearms design and preferred uses. The Kel Tec plr16 is a long range target/hunting firearm which is not what most would consider for self defense.m

Not saying this is your intentions, however I am not sure how new to CHL you are.

Hi,
45, 4 life. No,this is not my choice for a weapon to carry. The one I use now is eyes, ears, brain and cellphone. Key is to look like a sheepdog.
But the question is what are the legal limits. The line between a gun and rifle is blurred with this type of weapons. :bigear:
A review of "what is your carry" in this forum, shows individuals with 20 to 40 rounds, maybe 2 weapons, pepper spray, 1-2 knifes. What is the reason?
What kind of world requires this much fire power. :headscratch It is sad if we need to use these kind of tools to live. Sheep, wolf, sheepdog world? Will the future require more fire power? Will we travel only on amoried convoys with private security? I have been in countries with sniper tower in the parking lots, just go south 1500 miles. I know a right not used, is right lose. So, a CHL is a requirement to keep the right to bare arms.
Yes, I am new to CHL. But I have worked 30 years in major ER trauma centers and a Vet. :patriot:
These are just questions about who we are or what we are becoming in this world. :headscratch :thewave :patriot: :cheers2:

The law is clear on this:
PC §46.01. (5) "Handgun" means any firearm that is designed, made, or
adapted to be fired with one hand.
I'm sure anyone caught carrying that Kel-Tec would be charged with UCW under PC §46.02.

In response to your observations, aside from clusters of random shooting such as the one that we are in now, rates of violent crime have been dropping in most places. The vast majority of Americans die in bed, not from criminal or terrorist activity.

Based on what? It's a handgun. There is no gray area: under both federal and state law, it's either a handgun or a long gun. If it's a handgun it's covered by the CHL; if it's a long gun, no CHL is needed to carry openly or concealed, loaded or not.

Sorry. I meant that someone without a CHL who was caught carrying a Kel-Tec PLR-16 without a CHL would be charged with UCW because it is a handgun. The police and the rest of the justice system would consider it a handgun.

I'm a human and I'm happy to look like a human not a sheepdog. I don't want to be the Shaggy DA. :rolll

Take a look at what the average cop is carrying where you live. Citizens live in the same world and face the same criminals. It's true that citizens don't have to make arrests and that's why most of us don't carry handcuffs. We also don't carry police walkies and can't make a quick radio call for backup. Even if we call 911, help can take a long time to arrive, probably longer than a cop's officer needs assistance call. So we may need more than the average cop so we can win the fight.
We're here. With gear. Get used to it.

Chaplin,
I understand the meaning of your question, as you can see by my earlier response I am also concerned with what some individuals consider a carry piece these days.
Chaplin wrote:The one I use now is eyes, ears, brain and cellphone.
I use the following: eyes, ears, brain, cellphone, and a 45. Hopefully in that order, but I would have no second thoughts in changing that order if required to do so.
Chaplin wrote:A review of "what is your carry" in this forum, shows individuals with 20 to 40 rounds, maybe 2 weapons, pepper spray, 1-2 knifes. What is the reason?
I question some items that I see posted here as well, however I believe that most of what you describe above is by a few and not the majority. I have in read in other forums about people wearing body armor as well. Since leaving the LEO profession I have never felt the need for armor. I currently provide construction managment for several customers in the food process industry. I have been in some areas where gang activity has created enough concern where I packed additional ammunitions. This was done with the thought of being caught in the middle of a dispute. I would much rather be huddled with plenty and not need it than to need it and not have it.
Chaplin wrote:What kind of world requires this much fire power.
I will use the city of Memphis TN. as an example, if a person were carrying what you or I would consider to much gun and/or to much ammo. You would be undergunned. Many cities in the US have parts that you should not drive through at night, and if you should find yourself lost in one of these areas you could not carry enough fire power to feel safe. That is the kind of world we find ourselves in today. It will only get worse as it continues to spread from the inner cities. 1500 miles south is getting closer to home everyday. That is not just my opinion but is shared with many current LEO's that I talk with.
Chaplin wrote:Will we travel only on amoried convoys with private security
I know several indivduals that went to the New Orleans area after the hurricane. Yes they did travel in armed convoys and yes there was plenty of private security used.
Chaplin wrote:These are just questions about who we are or what we are becoming in this world.
We are those committed to survival, and the protection of our friends and family. We use every right given to us as Americans in order to be successful. We are becoming nothing more than what we have been all along, from the revolution to the present there are those of us that are willing to fight for our country, our freedom, our familys, and our beliefs. The enviroment that we live in is changing, we are not changing, we are adapting as best we can.

FYI: I carry either a Kimber Desert Warrior, (3) addtional clips, and (1) knife, or insert Glock 36 in place of the warrior. Much less than I carried while an LEO, however I am better trained and a much better shot these days.
