Would you support "open carry" even if it resulted in greater restrictions on CHLs?

The poll, as stated. has only a negative outcome associated with it.

One side of the story, but as everyone knows there is always at least two sides to each story.

The way I see things:

I walk into a Wal-Mart, say, and I see a gentleman walking around with his wife. Said gentleman has on pressed jeans a white shirt and a tie. On his hip is a 1911, cocked and locked. I don’t even pay him further attention. All the other shoppers don’t get excited and go running up and down the aisles screaming: “That guy’s got a gun!

It just doesn’t happen.

I continue shopping and see this gentleman three or four more times while I'm in the store. He's just there shopping with his wife.

Wait, I look closer and I see a badge hung on his belt, it’s a small badge and I totally missed it for over 10 minutes. If I missed it, then many others have missed it as well.

The hysteria just is not there for Mr. Texas Ranger, off duty Sheriff’s deputy or some detective of the local PD.

This is a true happening.

Maybe because I work with guys who wear guns for a living all the time, I feel this way, but I don't think so.

I don’t believe that there would be more than a small handful of people who already have a CHL, in Texas, who would exercise their God Given right of self-protection in such a manner. Me, I am one who would, at times, exercise such a right.

Such a display would not be a daily endevor, most likely, but an option; an option that would, or could, be used if and when the situation presents. You would still have the option, of course, to carry concealed. For instance: Mall – concealed, Movie theatre – concealed, Home Depot – probably concealed. Farmer’s Supply – most likely open, etc.

It takes some common sense to know when to carry openly and when not to.

Most CHL'ers have that sense... granted some do not, but I feel that they are in the minority, a very large minority (how's that for an oxymoron?)

Therefore, since there is not a positive option to this question, I refuse to answer this poll because it is guided to only one outcome.

Sorry Charlie.

It's a hypothetical!!! As I stated, it's designed for one purpose only and that is to gauge at what cost people will support open carry. Why are you trying to read more into the poll or its purpose that was expressly stated? If I had wanted to determine what people thought would happen, I would have phrased the question in that light, but that's not its purpose.

Charles L. Cotton wrote:This is purely a hypothetical question that presumes widespread opposition to open carrying of handguns by CHLs. The presumptions underlying this hypothetical are:
  • 1) Public response to "open carry" results in many businesses posting 30.06 signs for the first time;

    2) The list of statutorily off-limits locations are significantly expanded; or

    3) Both 1) and 2).
Question: If this were the response to "open carry" in Texas, would you still support changing the law to allow "open carry" by CHLs?

The purpose of this poll is solely to determine how many people would support open carry, at any and all costs.

Please don't post something saying "it wouldn't happen here." That ignores the parameters of the hypothetical question.

Chas.
Voted "2" but with an explenation.

I'm not worried about businesses posting 30.06, but I am worried about new governmental restrictions.

in that case, I vote - yes, I would support Open Carry in this hypothetical condition.

I voted no. I have no objection to open carry at all, but probably wouldn't even if I could. I wouldn't want any more restrictions added to CHL unless it applied only to open carry. :txflag:

Given the parameters, I would vote no.

I would like to see OC happen as an option for current and future CHL holders (our choice to what is fitting at any given time), BUT only if getting it meant no loss of current priveledge to excercise our rights. In other words, no further restrictions.
