Kimber extractor issues?

Post by CJATE »

I have found what I think is a heck of a deal on an older kimber. Seems that most of the kimber issues that have seared me off are related to cheap mags and extractors. I read further about the change from external to internal and recently learned of possible issues when they moved from MT to NY. I understand that much of this may be hear say and not fact.

So I ask this. Those of you who have had trouble, or know first hand of trouble.

what Model?
What extractor? (internal or external)
What year?
What size? (4 or full size)

Got my cash, ready to order my TRP :fire , but very interested in this used kimber.

Some will tell of trouble.
I am on my 3rd Kimber as daily carry & have owned 2 more.
My son is now carrying #2. It has 10K + through it w/o a bobble.
I know the man I sold the 1st to. It is a Compact modle & he shoots occasionally. Cleans it every now & then :banghead: & still has no trouble w/ it.
My Pro CDP has 3K through it & not an issue. Son & myself clean & maintain ours like our life may someday depend on them.
The 4th, an Eclipse, I sold to a friend on the board here & it was his 1st 1911. He called saying it would not go into battery occasionally & I sent him a new recoil spring. No more trouble.
All of the above were the 4" guns. I had a Royal & sold it to an ex LEO. It is his daily carry now & I still hear from him occasionally. No issues there. His is a 5" gun.
I find them to be totally reliable. Have had no issues at all w/ any.
All 5 have internal extractors. All the problems I know of stemmed from the external extractors.
My experience & YMMV. I trust mine.

Either way I dont think you can go wrong.
I have a SA 1911-A1 also. It is a 5" gun & I carry it a lot.
Both are excellent carry guns.

used kimber that has my attention:

Team match II

i would have bought it today if it did not have external extractors, I will hate my self if I regret it either way, and I am not one to be indecisive. Drawn to it, but hesitant. ($250 cheaper then new TRP)

Personally I do not care for the target sites but they can be changed if you do not like them & for a lot less than the $250.00.

I have had like LT afew Kimbers and neer had a problem with any of them, I have had both ext. int. extractors and if you use good mags there is not a issue with FTF FTE. I have had 3" 4" and 2 5" slides and all worked

I like Kimbers and carry one everyday .

This may be obvious, but maybe not.
That picture is from Kimber's website, so it's not the actual piece for sale.

Ok, I've just seen a lot of people trying to sell stuff on eBay and whatnot and using the manufacturer's website pics of that model rather than pics of what they're actually selling. I didn't know if that was a pic provided to you by a seller or not.

I started out with a Firestorm 1911 (cheap alloy frame/slide gun assembled in NJ from Llama parts made in spain) with an external extractor and had no problems with extractor until the claw broke off and they replaced it free under warrenty.

I shot it to death (frame was cracking) and bought a Kimber Custom II (their base 1911) which now comes with an internal extractor again. The difference in trigger feel/performance, accuracy and overall feel is like comparing a clunker Falcon to a tuned Mach I Mustang. I have put 7000 rounds through my Kimber in about 7 months and have had NO problems with extraction.

I have read/heard the complaints about the Kimber II firing pin block safety but have never had any trouble with it. The gun always goes bang when I hold it so that the grip safety is depressed even when I don't have a perfect grip. I never have any trouble with rapid follow up shots. My "Bill Drill" isn't quite up to SRVA or Jbirds speed but I have been admonished for using an Automatic Weapon at a certain gun range.

In my experience, the Kimber Custom II is worth every penny it costs and I carry mine every day with confidence that it will do its job if I need it in the gravest extreme.
Reasonable gun control is hitting your target with the first shot.

I have two Kimbers, both with the external extractor, but neither has ever jammed unless the shooter was limp-wristing. Of course I probably have fewer than 200 rounds through the two of them.

I have a relatively new Kimber UC II. It has internal extractor. Fires perfectly without a FTF from the very first time fired. I love the gun, and will probably never part with it. I would recommend Kimber to anyone.
