Well, then it's not a substitute for purification tablets, and it won't let me get clean water for cooking, tea or other uses.

For $40, they could at least include fittings to turn it into a gravity filter allowing collection of the filtered water. In the meantime, I'll stick with my nice cheap Chlor-Floc tablets...and a couple days' worth of stored water.

I have a couple of Aquamira Frontier Filters for emergencies--they easily fit into a small emergency kit. They have less of a capacity than the one in the OP (75L vs 500L), but are also much easier on the pocketbook--Cheaper Than Dirt sells them for about 6 bucks each.
