Now this is creepy...triple murder/arson by teens

Sounds like something out of a Stephen King movie.

Teenagers arrested in triple-killings on remote East Texas ranch
By PAUL J. WEBER
Associated Press Writer

ALBA, Texas -- A mother and two children were killed during a predawn attack on their remote East Texas ranch where police said another man was critically injured by gunshot wounds and the family's house burned to the ground.

Four people, including three high school students and one juvenile, were arrested hours later in this rural town and will be charged with three counts of capital murder each, Rains County Sheriff David Traylor said.

Tightlipped authorities provided little details, refusing to release any names or what motivated the shootings and fire. Two boys, ages 8 and 13, and a 39-year-old woman were found dead inside the home.

The father was in critical but stable condition at a nearby hospital, Traylor said. Those who knew the family say the man dragged his bloodied body to a neighbor for help after being shot.

"It's the scariest thing," Traylor said. "You don't know what to make. I guess you imagine the worst and hope for the best."

The sheriff said authorities could not determine whether gunshots or the fire caused the deaths, saying, "The bodies have been so badly burned."

Traylor would only describe the suspects as two males and two females who knew the family. All four were in the Rains County Jail. The family had a teenage daughter, but Traylor did not provide information on her whereabouts.

Traylor said a family of five lived at the house that sat on at least 20 acres of pine-canopied, remote woodland on a narrow gravel road with just two other homes.

Carl Johnson, a friend of the family, said he drove to the secluded county road early Saturday after being told of the fire. He said the father dragged his wounded body about 150 yards to a neighbor's house, leaving a bloody trail.

Johnson described the family as musicians, the boys playing guitars and harmonica and the mother piano at church. He said he'd often tell the teenage daughter that he wanted her to sing at his funeral.

"I just thought the whole world of the family," said Johnson, 75. "They were good Christian people. (The father) was like a son of my own."

Harold Read, who lives about a mile from the home, said he was awakened by what he thought was thunder around 4 a.m., the time when authorities were first called to the house.

"All you read about out here are ticky-tacky crimes in the local paper," said Read, 67. "I never lock my doors. This is a quiet place."

Alba is about 60 miles northeast of Dallas in Rains County, the second-smallest county in Texas. A neighbor who didn't want to be identified described the area as so quiet that the sheriff once told him the only crimes are deer poachers about twice a year.

By late Saturday, firefighters sifted through ash and singed metal that was all that remained from the house. A wood sign tacked to a tree in the family's dirt driveway read "Joshua 24:15," and a burned van was parked near where the home once stood.

Joshua 24:15, a verse from the Old Testament, reads in part, "But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD."

This will get more interesting when the whole story comes out. What on earth was the motivation?

This type of murder by teenagers almost always has one of two explanations:
  • the parents will not allow their daughter to see a boy, and Romeo and Juliet kill the family
  • random thrill-seeking
This story could fit either scenario.

All the news stories currently available are copies or rewrites of the one posted above.

The news last night carried a story that supports Seamus theory. I believe the rest of the details will come out when they find the teenage daughter.

The family may have had plenty of weapons accessible in the house, but were simply not on the alert.

If this family knew the teens, it is likely that they opened the door and invited them in.

What happened to this family is sickening; it reveals that there is evil in the world.

This sort of thing is why I carry even around my house. Just because I live in the country doesn't mean that evil can't show up in person.

Suspects arraigned in East Texas slayings
08:56 PM CST on Sunday, March 2, 2008
Associated Press

Rains County Sheriff David Traylor discusses the investigation
3/2/2008

EMORY, Texas —The lone survivor of a pre-dawn attack on a rural family who had sought to break up their teenage daughter's romance clung to life Sunday as the girl and three others sat in jail.

Terry Caffey, who was shot in the head, was able to crawl about 300 yards to a neighbor's house while flames consumed his home with his wife, Penny, 37, and sons Mathew, 13, and Tyler, 8, inside, the Rains County Sheriff's Department said.

"When I first heard, I was like, 'I don't even think I would have crawled out of the house,'" Pastor Todd McGahee told about 80 tearful worshippers Sunday at Miracle Faith Baptist Church, where the Caffeys were members.

"But God has a purpose for Terry's life. God has a reason. God gave him the strength to get out."

Terry Caffey was in critical condition Sunday at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler. His wife and sons had been shot and stabbed multiple times, according to the sheriff's department.

Carl Johnson, a friend of the Caffeys, said the family moved about two years ago to just outside this farming town of about 1,500. He called them good Christians and said he often told the daughter that he wanted her soft singing voice to perform at his funeral.

"They didn't like the boy and were trying to break them up," Johnson said. "They told me at church they didn't have any use for him."

The 16-year-old girl, whose name was withheld because of her age, was arraigned Sunday on three counts of capital murder and was being held on $1.5 million bond. Three others from ages 18 to 20, including the girl's suspected boyfriend, were arraigned on the same charges and given the same bond.

"Early on in the investigation, it was revealed that the juvenile and one of the suspects were dating and made to break up," the Sheriff's Department said in a news release.

Charlie James Wilkinson, 19; Charles Allen Wade, 20; and Bobbi Gale Johnson, 18, all of Emory, were being held at the Rains County jail. It was not immediately clear whether they had attorneys.

The daughter is confined in neighboring Hunt County's juvenile detention center in Greenville. Investigators said she was found hiding at the home of one of the suspects, though it was not immediately clear which of the suspects she was dating.

McGahee implored worshippers to pray for the Caffeys' daughter and not blame the parents of the suspects, at least one of whom attended the small church.

"There's been a change in this church and a change in this community," he said. "And we can't just wish it away. ... It will be the same loss, the same hurt tomorrow."

The scene of the attack was about 20 acres of pine-canopied, remote land in Alba on a narrow gravel road with just two other homes. The town is about 60 miles northeast of Dallas in Rains County, the second-smallest county in Texas.

Authorities said they have recovered one weapon and are searching for another. Sheriff David Traylor said investigators haven't been able to determine whether the fire or gunshots caused their deaths because "the bodies have been so badly burned."

The family's home sat about three miles off U.S. 69, the main two-lane highway near Emory. Hay bales, horses and cattle dot the landscape down the county road leading to their secluded house, where a picnic table and burned van sit near the pile of black ash that is all that remains of the home.

These doings are satanic. We can only pray for this man, Terry Caffey, who has lost everything he valued in this world.

Seamus, by 'satanic doings' do you mean simply the 'work of Satan' in a fallen world? Or was there some sort of ritualistic aspect to these murders that the press is suppressing? If the former, I would agree with you. If the latter,I'll have to wait & see what comes out in the news at trial/arraignment. I don't have any 'inside' info.

The story I heard on the radio this morinng said the parents made the daughter break up with her boyfriend.
If I was that father those kids would not have a safe place when I healed from my wounds. Age has no place in my mind when they was to comit acts of this nature. I bet you that they all think they are just going to get slaps on the wrist and sent on their way.

That's what I meant. It's pure evil. I don't see how the perpetrators could have thought they would get away with it.

Thats becasue kids these days think they can get away with anything. If they do get caught they think Mommy and Daddy will get them out of it. Everytime I see a story like this it makes me sick. I just hope that I can be aleast half as good as my dad was for me. :confused5

Someone's parents might get them out of a drunk driving conviction or something like that. Not multiple murder and arson.
