Am I eligible for a CHL?
I am interested in getting a CHL sometime within the next year or so. However, I have a class C misdemeanor for theft < $50 on my record from something like 3 or 4 years ago. As I understand the regulations, I would still be eligible since it is not a class B misdemeanor. Although I assume they can deny them for pretty much whatever reason if they really want to. My question is, do I at least meet the basic requirements to apply for a CHL? If so, how likely do you think it is that they will deny it because of the "incident" on my record? That is the only blemish on my record beyond speeding tickets. I understand if I can't get a CHL for a few more years because of this, but if I CAN, I would like to. Alright, now flame suit ON since I might now be a member of the bad part of society! Just rest assured, that incident was a crazy days of my youth thing and is long since passed...I'm actually pretty darn respectable nowadays, married and all!

A class C misdemeanor does not disqualify you, even if you were convicted this morning. Only class A and B misdemeanors have the five-year waiting period.
You do have to obtain documentation of the disposition of the case, which can be a hassle with lesser offenses.
BTW, they can't deny a CHL for "pretty much whatever reason if they really want to." Texas is a shall-issue state. If you meet the qualifications they must issue a license.

Jim, thank you for the information! It was very helpful, I didn't realize that shall-issue really meant that they actually MUST issue a license if the qualifications were met. I guess it makes sense, it just seems so...easy.
