The fact that you can pass NICS and buy a firearm does not mean that you are qualified for a CHL. To get a CHL, you must have no misdemeanor convictions for five years, and no more than one alcohol or drug-related misdemeanor conviction in ten years.

Then there's the disqualification for default on child support and certain student loans and taxes.

Even if you haven't been convicted in the past 5/10 years (depending on the charge), I belive you still have to list your entire history of arrests and convictions, not that it will automatically disqualify you

If by "not a model youth" you mean that your offenses were juvenile offenses, and they were more than 10 years ago, they will not disqualify you from getting a Texas CHL.

If you are still concerned, you should contact your instructor before your class to get further clarification.

Looking forward to jumping in and taking part of the forum. I will be taking my CHL class this coming Saturday. I am curious if the state will let me have a license as I was not a model youth. I made some mistakes 20 plus years ago and now am a hard working husband/father. If you are able to purchase a handgun and or any other firearm legally does that mean you should be accepted by the state for a CHL license?

I was not a model youth either and they let me have one. I think you would good to go.

You need to be sure that your juvenile convictions* were not felonies or domestic violence misdemeanors. If they weren't, and they were 20 years ago, you won't have a problem with that aspect.

About the only domestic violence a minor could be guilty of is hitting his live-in girlfriend. Very few 17-year-olds boys are married.

*I know they don't call it conviction with juveniles, but it might as well be when we're talking about CHL qualifications.

I'm wondering if he had hit/threatened his mother father siblings if that would fall under domesti violence law,just a question as i believe i've seen arrests on cops where juvenile assaulteda parent or siblingand i believe he was arrested for domestic violence since they lived at the same address

State definitions of domestic violence and federal law are different. I mistakenly thought that the injured party had to be an "intimate partner." That is not the case. Here's the full story from BATFE: http://www.atf.gov/pub/fire-explo_pub/i33103.pdf

It's pretty complicated, but it boils down to beating your wife, "girlfriend," or kids -- not other relatives.

Well I completed the class Saturday with a perfect score on the written part and 241 on the shooting. Had a great time and learned a tremendous amount! There are lots of things to be considered with carrying. I would not mind sitting thru the class again just to soak up everything once more. The instructors assisted me with the paper work after disclosing to them my concerns and everything should be a go! I guess this is where I move to the "waiting room" now huh?!!!

Sitting through the class would be one way to refresh the old memory cells. However let me share this with you.

I would look through this forum often before becomming a member just to stay up on the do's and do not's of cancealed carry. This is without question the best place out there to keep refreshing your knowledge and to stay in the loop on changes cccuring at both state and national level. If you do not see answers to your question just submit a post and get ready for the information to flow in this group will not let you down.
