The US Supreme Court appears ready to rule that Americans have a constitutional right to keep a gun in their home for self-defence, a ruling that could help Republicans in the upcoming presidential election.

Hearing the most important gun rights case in nearly 70 years, the justices on Tuesday spent 98 minutes engrossed in a lively debate about British and American legal traditions relating to the right to bear arms, especially in self-defence.

I'll hold my breath,It was saying that some states etc. may be able to regulate types of weapons you can own,I hope they rule against the ban everybody as the right to protect themselves from criminals

Of course it doesn't mean anything. This is simply a little bit of good news. Would you all rather have seen a headline reading "Supreme Court Seems ready to denounce the 2nd Amendment"?

I caught this quote on Fox from Chief Justice Roberts: "Is it reasonable to ban a weapon (Handguns) whose primary role is Self-Defense? The answer is clearly No."

You have got be thankful that we have a Chief justice who leans to the right.....

Interesting statistics: Since the DC ban on Handguns, Crime has gone up 70%. Murder rates have tripled.
On the flip side, when Handgun ownership is mandatory (Like a town in GA) Crime is next to nill.

Unfortunately many logical people illogically follow emotions and not statistics and empirical data when dealing with the idiocy that is gun control. The Brady Bunch likes to trot out victims of gun violence to play with people's emotions instead of dealing with the real problem at hand, which is a VIOLENCE problem, not a gun problem. Regretfully, this is oftentimes a pretty powerful tactic and has more visual impact (especially if the victim is disabled as a result) than bringing out a person who says, I am alive and 100% OK because a gun saved me.

What is interesting about this case though is that it has been crafted and built and financed from the very beginning by someone who doesn't associate himself as 'right' but rather a libertarian (Robert Levy). A true liberal should buy into the belief that the RKKBA is a civil right. It hasn't been unusual to find such liberal organizations such as the ACLU siding with us on occasion.

I think its an important distinction that we need to make. We need to lead the left leaning folks to see the whole RKBA as a civil right. If we have them on our side we win.

I am a member of both the NRA and the ACLU, as are many who understand the truth about how these two organizations share many principles. I share their broad ideals without having to share certain extreme positions each sometimes takes, understanding that they, each in their own way, espouse the "foot in the door" doctrine.

Bravo to Levy/Gura/everyone involved and all the amicus briefs - the number and quality of the briefs submitted surely prepared SCOTUS for the magnitude of this case, and the oral arguments were of secondary importance.

Interesting way for the Yahoo article to open up, saying that the Court had declared anything at all. That's not what this event was about - sure, you can kind of get a sense of where each justice is at by the questions they ask (and their tenacity in having them answered), but during oral arguments SCOTUS only asks questions, doesn't "declare" anything in particular until the written decision is released (June in this case).
