Why is it that..

Post by numist »

Texas honors permits from Iowa, but Iowa doesn't honor Texas CHL? I mean, if our card isn't any good in their state, why should we allow theirs to work here? Doesn't really seem fair to me.
The reason I ask is that we have some relatives there and were discussing a trip up there this spring or summer.
I checked http://www.handgunlaw.us/ and found what I found. I'm sure that this may not be an isolated case and may be the same with a few other states but it sure made me stop and think.

Gov. Perry has issued many unilateral proclamations with other states allowing the honoring of that state's concealed carry license. I fail to see how this can be considered a bad thing. We should be grateful that we have an attorney general and governor that are pro-active regarding reciprocity. While I don't know if it has happened yet, it is certainly likely that at some point it will result in actual reciprocity with these states. There is nothing wrong with taking the first step.

I have not kept up with this, but I seem to remember a few states that are not allowed to negotiate reciprocity with other states, but could honor them. To give them an incentive to do so, Gov. Perry made the decision to honor theirs if it met the other requirements. Kansas is one state with this sort of dual unilateral declaration.

Iowa is still "may issue" by county (and it varies a lot from one county to the next). They have no statewide system in place that could honor Texas licenses.

I married an Iowenian. One of these days we will have to visit Dubuque just to see all her old haunts.

When Texas law on reciprocity was "fixed" and it was taken away from DPS and was given to the AG and the Governor, the law was changed to require the Governor to proclaim unilateral recognition of any state who license system qualified. Even though this is required by law, Attorney General Greg Abbott and Governor Perry have both been eager to comply. Both have stood with gun owners at every opportunity.

While I applaud Texas efforts to be the better man in extending courtesy to the other states it just shows that states such as Iowa have a long way to go on this issue. Still some pretty weird gun laws around the US right now. I too am certainly glad to be a born and raised Texan. :txflag:
