Most similar to a 1903 Colt?

Post by KD5NRH »

My wife got to shoot mom's 1903 .32 yesterday, and she really wants one for carry when she gets a CHL. I also got her over to a shop that had a Commander-size RIA that she liked a lot, but she wants something smaller for normal carry, and I have to say the .32ACP is comfortable to shoot, and a lot better than nothing for defense. The size is well suited for her hands, and the weight is just enough to feel right. (I haven't found an opportunity for her to actually shoot a KelTec P32 yet, but we both suspect it's a bit smaller and lighter than she'd like.

I've seen used 1903s in stores a few times, but the prices are way up there for the condition they were in. I'm surprised no one has brought back the overall design with modern safety features. What's the closest thing on the market now?

I really like my P32 and it is easy and fun to shoot. I carry mine all the time. It just fits anywhere. I got the belt clip on it for added flexibilty in carry options.

PM me if you are in the Houston area and I would be happy to let your lady try it.

I really like the 1903 Colt as well even with the .32 caliber. It seems to me it should be very careable. However I have not been able to find any modern handgun that is close to it.

Unfortunately, the trip would cost a significant portion of the cost of a P32 at current gas prices. If Ruger would make the LCP in .32, I'd buy one and carry it myself if she didn't like it, but as close as the Rugers are in price to the KelTecs, I'd rather have the better name.

Besides, I think of not buying KelTecs as my own little way of punishing Kellgren for not getting the Grendel P30 back on the market.

I prefer to use the 10rd mag with my P32. Besides holding extra rounds, it gives me a five fingered grip on the gun. Still not very large, even with the 10rd mag.
