Woman set on fire during Dallas robbery

A woman was set on fire early Friday by a man who also robbed her of her wedding ring and $24 at a southeast Dallas bus stop, police said.
Despite the fiery assault, the 24-year-old woman was in good condition at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, said Senior Cpl. Kevin Janse, police spokesman.
The incident happened around 7:15 a.m. in the 2300 block of Hatcher Street when the man robbed the victim of her wedding ring and cash. Then he ordered her to kneel down and close her eyes, Janse said.
"She complies, but then she feels something being poured on her," he said.
Then the man set her on fire and fled the scene.
The woman rolled on the ground to put out the flames, Janse said. She got up and ran to a nearby station for Dallas Fire-Rescue and was subsequently taken to Parkland, Janse said.
According to the victim, the man was black, about 6 feet tall and weighed about 220 pounds. He wore a hooded sweatshirt and a face covering.
No arrests were reported Friday, but he will face charges of aggravated robbery if he is caught, Janse said.
"We haven't had this happen in the past," he added.
A similar incident, however, happened March 8 in the Como neighborhood of West Fort Worth when a 34-year-old woman arguing with a man over an apparent drug debt was burned on 65 percent of her body.
Police said the man sprayed lighter fluid on her and set her on fire. She was also taken to Parkland and the man was arrested.

It's another good reason to not comply with thugs who threaten your life.

Exactly. I still find it strange that while the mentality dealing with terrorists on a plane has changed (ie, do not comply with their orders and assume they want to kill everyone, so the only logical thing to do is fight back), on the ground people still prefer to leave their fate into the hands of thugs who threaten their lives instead of fighting back.KBCraig wrote:It's another good reason to not comply with thugs who threaten your life.

It doesn't have anything to do with DART (although I believe you should carry everywhere you legally can) but everything with this - "in the 2300 block of Hatcher Street". You definitely shouldn't be in this area without a gun.

Probably shouldn't be there with a gun, either.

I'm wondering why he will only be charged with aggravated robbery; it seems that attempted murder, or at least assault/battery, would be added to the charges.

Aggravated robbery is a first degree felony punishable by 5 to 99 years in prison, the same as murder. It's easier to prove aggravated robbery than attempted murder.Venus Pax wrote:I'm wondering why he will only be charged with aggravated robbery; it seems that attempted murder, or at least assault/battery, would be added to the charges.
Aggravated assault is a second-degree felony. Texas doesn't have a crime called battery. Aggravated assault is what some other states call assault and battery or mayhem.

Can't speak for the bus system but the DART Light Rail system is pretty good. Just like the road system in Dallas you've got to know which ones might take you to a dangerous area and avoid those routes.
Plus, having a gun with you is always the best policy. DART rail and the TRE are good modes of transportation especially with fuel closing in on $4 per gallon.
