Cops: 3rd-graders aimed to hurt teacher By RUSS BYNUM, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 12 minutes ago

WAYCROSS, Ga. - A group of third-graders plotted to attack their teacher, bringing a broken steak knife, handcuffs, duct tape and other items for the job and assigning children tasks including covering the windows and cleaning up afterward, police said Tuesday.

The plot by as many as nine boys and girls at Center Elementary School in south Georgia was a serious threat, Waycross Police Chief Tony Tanner said.

And they wonder why we should allow carry in schools. Can you imagine what this would have been like if they were JH/HS?

The threats are not always from the outside, terrorists in black masks and AKs. Third graders with knives and a plan could be just as serious to the person they attack.

I have a problem linking this to guns in schools. I would think it would rather be a good reason to bring back spankings

That's a shame. Teachers and school administrators have a right to protect themselves.
With so much that has been going on in schools over the Past couple of years, Nothing suprises me anymore.
If these students actually attempted to do harm to the Teacher, far as I'm concerned, all bets are off, Teacher bust out one or two of em' front grill they like so much, the others would lay it down.
Once a child, whether its a Teenager, or one in the 5th Grade decides he wants to have the mind of a Criminal, then he, or she should get a taste of what that World has to offer. Take him/her over to a cellblock where men live 23 of 24 hours a day. Let them see what its really like.
Folks, I only see this kind of stuff getting worse and worse.

If we spank them, we might make them violent.

ETA: I'm so sick of school psychologists. Many of them are destroying what is left of the child's conscience.

Third graders? That's just insane.

What kind of parents do these kids have?

My mother teaches 4th grade currently in a suburb of north dallas. She tought 3rd grade for 15+ years. She says that every day she has to stay aware of her surroundings in her own class room because she fully believes that her students could pull something like this.

This was class of special needs kids. Whether it be autistic, ADD, ADHD, or other learning disabilities. While some of these types kids do come from homes where the parents have don't give them the proper guidance, that can't be said of all. My wife frequently substitutes for special needs classes in a upper middle class community and I could see these kids just as easily plotting to do something. They don't have to be the ghetto or project type of parent to not give their child the right support and directives.

Waycross is a small town of about 15, 000. According to the census from 2000, about 30% of the population is in below poverty level. Median income is about $23,400 annually. The racial makeup of the city was 44.31% White, 53.51% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.62% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.68% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.37% of the population.

These small communities may have a lower income level, but that doesn't mean they are ghetto and project types of families. I have seen many of these types of communities have a much higher rate of support for the folks than the cities overall. Many people know each other and community support can be strong. Crime statistics show it is on average nationwide for violent crimes, and property crimes are a little higher than national average. But this is no different from the town of 25,000 I hail from, and probably not a lot different than many small communities.

As a side note, this is Burt Reynolds home town, as well as Ossie Davis and Billy Carter to name a few famous folks.
