FFL fees

Post by rodnocker1 »

I am sending off my paperwork tomorrow to get my FFL. I am trying to find out about any fees that the federal or state government charge as far as transfers go. I have seen charges ranging as far up as $55.00. $50.00 for the transfer and $5.00 for the background check. I have not been able to find anywhere in the app. or other paper work where it says there is a charge for them running the background check. Also, the transfer fee seems JUST A TAD HIGH!!! I also need to find out about the state requirements for being a dealer. I called the Houston BATF Field office and all they could tell me is that I had to meet state and local ordinances. :?: :?: :?: Okay, so what are they? Anyway, if there is an FFL out there who would not mind PMing me with the above info, I would greatly appreciate it. Sorry if this posted in the wrong spot Charles, but it is the only place that made sense.

I don't believe there is any fee from NICS to do the Federal Check. Texas requires no state level check, so no fee there.

The fees that FFL's charge to people doing transfers is typically to cover the costs associated with handling a gun the FFL did not sell.

For example, if somone in Dallas buys a gun from an internet auction site, they can have it shipped to them at our range. We charge $35 to cover the time it takes our shipping/receiving person to receive the gun, enter it into our record book (required as a dealer) and notify the buyer that the gun is in.

Then when the person comes in, an employee has to complete the 4473, call NICS and deliver the gun.

The two local(-ish) shops that I patronize both charge $10 for simple transfers.

The last time I took advantage of this, I called my favorite dealer (Paul's Pawn Shop in New Boston), and told them I was about to place an order with Century for three M69 Romanian trainers. I called my Century rep, paid by credit card, gave him the dealer's name, he looked it up to verify they had the FFL on file, and shipped the rifles. A few days later, they arrived via UPS ground, addressed to me in care of the dealer. I drove out, filled out the 4473, paid them $10 per gun, and took possession.

Oh, and I also bought ammo and such. I make it a point to do that as a way of saying thanks.

Both dealers will also take care of the ordering and advance payment, but they charge 10% above wholesale for that service.

NICS is no-charge; there is no state xfer fee that I know of;the state and local laws that pertain to FFL are mostly about being sure that the area you live in is zoned correctly- you wil probably have to show something that states you can have an at-home business when the ATF comes for your interview
$10 xfers
$5 for CHL

Thanks to everyone for the responses. I didn't know if the ATF came here or I went to see them. The home based business shouldn't be a problem as there is a mobile home park directly across the Hwy. from me and an alternator/starter repair business being operated out of someone's garage next to him. We are not what you might call a large town (175 people), I just need to find out who to get to sign off on the zoning. That was what I needed to find out. Thanks again everyone.
