Fresno Student Shot, Killed by Police Officer After Bat Attack

FRESNO, Calif. — A police officer shot and killed a high school student Wednesday after the teenager attacked the officer with a baseball bat on campus, authorities said.

Police said the officer fired shortly before noon, after a 17-year-old boy at Roosevelt High School allegedly came up behind the officer and hit him in the head with the bat, according to Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer. The officer fell down dazed, grabbed a gun from his ankle holster and fired, Dyer said.

"The officer was fortunate that he was able to defend himself," the chief said.

If you sneak up behind anybody with a bat, let alone a cop, and whack that person on head hard enough to split their scalp open, that is a failed attempted murder as far as I'm concerned. I think it is remarkable that the officer was even able to get to his BUG on the way down, deploy it, and get a shot off. That he killed the kid is of no concern to me. If that kid was willing to do that, unprovoked, to a cop, who else was he going to kill in cold blood later on in life?

You're right... the reaction of the parent at the bottom of the article displays a tremendous ignorance.

Quote: "The officer fell down dazed, and reached for the gun in his hip holster, but the clip fell out.

As the student came at him a second time, the officer grabbed a secondary weapon — a semiautomatic handgun he carried as backup — from his ankle holster and fired one or two rounds, Dyer said. The student reportedly died within a few minutes.

"The officer was fortunate that he was able to defend himself," the chief said. "This officer had a secondary weapon that very likely could have saved his life."

It sounds like his primary may have had a tigger disconnect with the magazine out. Glad he had the back up - and was able to get to it after having his head bashed. Yeah, that parent comment at the end is reeeeeeal stoooopid.

"My son and my brother went to school here too, and nothing like this ever happened. I think this wasn't enough for him to kill the kid," she said.

so since her brother and son went there way back when, then it must be exactly the same today? And he wasn't trying to kill the kid, he was trying to keep his own skull from being bashed into his brain. He just happenened to kill him in the process.
Its not like he put the whole clip into the kid, which STILL would have been justified IMHO.

I was stationed about 60 miles north of Fresno from 85-91, (well, that was the last time). Ol' Fresburg could be a pretty rough place even back then. The kid got what he asked for. Last I read on this one was they suspect suicide by cop.

He is more fortunate than a teacher would have been in the situation, seeing as how teachers are not allowed to carry. :rules:

a teacher would have just been severly injured or worse, and it would have been their own fault in some way Im sure
