My first year as a gun owner

Post by Fosforos »

It's been about a year since I rented and shot my first handgun. I was thinking back on the past year - it's been quite a ride.

A little more than a year ago I went to Targetmasters and rented a Glock. My hands trembled uncontrollably when loading the magazine, and I even managed to load the rounds in backwards. I thought something looked off when the bullet was pointing towards me after the slide jammed. After correcting that mistake, I promptly shaved off a good amount of skin off my left thumb because of an improper grip on the gun. Did that twice actually, but learned fast that stupid hurts.

About a week later I bought my first gun, and learned the care and feeding of it.
MrsFosforos bought her first gun shortly thereafter, and we took the CHL course together.

After that followed a binge on gun shows, a few more firearms, holsters, belts and other goodies. We attended the Forum Day in Friendswood and learned some much needed basic skills.

I have since got myself into reloading and the associated gear (thinking about casting bullets now). Also got into IDPA competition and I'm now a safety officer at the competitions at our local range.

Joined the NRA and TSRA. Got a Curio&Relic license too. Someone should have told me what an impact the decision to become a gun owner would have on my life.

I have met many great people in the last year, most of them members of this forum.

That's my recap of the past year - I believe things will slow down a little now.

Congrats on the transition! My wife is going through the transition now. Our 1 year anniversary was a few days ago, and she has even purchased her own handgun!

Forforos,
The longer you're enmeshed in our culture you'll look back and marvel at all that you didn't know. You'll look ahead and realize the magnitude of what you (and all of us) have left to learn.

Wedding day is steel (blued)

5 years is Brass.

10 years is Stainless.

Repeat as necessary and financially feasable.
