Carry in a hotel bar?

Post by agbullet2k1 »

So, I was visiting my favorite piano bar the other day, which happens to be part of a hotel, and I noticed that I could not find a 51% sign anywhere. That got me thinking, if a bar is owned by the hotel, inside the hotel, but in a seperate area, do the profits from alcohol sales still fold in with room rentals and restaurant charges? I would think that if they do, then it could not be considered 51%, but in the strictest sense, it is still a bar (fine scotch/cognac/brandy menu, cocktail waitresses, dude on piano, the works).

Before anyone points it out, the hotel is not 30.06 posted (as far as I've been able to tell), and I don't drink when I go, but I enjoy the entertainment.

I know it might be similar to a normal restaurant having a bar section, but this place is seperate from the restaurant, with a different staff and different name on the receipt.

Anyone have any thoughts on if it's legal to carry?

They have to have a license posted, and it will determine if they are 51% or not. You need to look for that, sans gun, the next time you are there so you can make sure.

Many large hotel chains lease out a portion of their hotel to an independent company so they liability for the lounge falls on the lessor and not the hotel chain.

The Tremont House, right? I could never figure that one out, but I can't afford to go there anyway. ;-)

San Luis actually. However, I'm always open to new suggestions. Still isn't cheap, hence the diet coke with lime on each visit.

Thanks Keith, I'll be on the lookout next time. Will the sign look like the 51% sign, just without the big red "51%" watermarked on it? I don't want to ask anyone working there, as it might tip them off as to what I'm up to. Sneaky sneaky.

I'm sorry for presuming. The Tremont House has a cocktail lounge in the lobby. There's no physical separation between the seats and the rest of the lobby where people come and go. I couldn't see any signs posted without looking like I was inspecting the place.

It's a classy piano bar, but expensive.

Yeah I've seen 51% signs everywhere from above bathroom doors to behind a row of bottles. No way to ask without sounding suspicious, but I almost feel like it's a big game of "Where's Waldo." There's one bar around here that has the sign by a bunch of other fake joke signs next to the taps, but there's a patio portion with no sign, so technically one never sees it unless they get tired of being outside and decide to go inside. Of course common sense says they don't serve food, so they are probably 51%, but it creates a headache for situations like the hotels where it's not so clear.

You can always contact the TABC http://www.tabc.state.tx.us/public.htm#how and ask them. They can tell you if it is or not.
