front strap checkering
Hi Forum,
Just a quick question, if I may. Are there any gunsmiths/establishments in the DFW area that will do front strap checkering? Thanks for replies.

Re: front strap checkering
I just tried phoning Williamson Precision, with the same question regarding checkering the front strap of a Kimber Stainless Ultra Carry II, and he said he would have to call me back early next week with a price and he took my number.
That seems like such a basic question that he should have been able to say "Oh, around $50" (or $75, or $100, or whatever) as a ballpark figure.
In any case, if you can't get an answer from them, try Euless Guns & Ammo at 817-267-6947. They have on-site gunsmiths and they do good work. My guess is that they wouldn't have much trouble answering the question. The other day I asked one of their gunsmiths approximately what it would cost to do a melt down treatment on the same Kimber. He thought about it for about 15 seconds and then allowed as how it wouldn't be more than about $100.

Re: front strap checkering
My 1911 smith in MD (when I lived there) used to charge me about $250 for hand checkering 20LPI. I had 2 front straps done and was very pleased with the results. I'll ask around to see if there is anyone else in your area.

Thanks for the names and recommendations...I appreciate it very much. Guess I'll give Euless Guns & Ammo a try. Think I'll attend the next Ft. Worth gun show, too, as long as I'll be in the area. Might do some buying & selling. Thanks again.

Shoulda bought a CDP, they already have it done...The Annoyed Man wrote:I just tried phoning Williamson Precision, with the same question regarding checkering the front strap of a Kimber Stainless Ultra Carry II, and he said he would have to call me back early next week with a price and he took my number.

FWIW, IIRC, AFAIK, FTMP, IANAL. YMMV.
Re: front strap checkering
You're probably right, Annoyed...should've bought a CDP. I called Euless Guns & Ammo today. Was told they don't do checkering. They suggested Ray's Hardware & Sporting Goods in Dallas. Called Ray's...they do checkering. Any feedback on Ray's? Thanks.

Re: front strap checkering
Yeah, I dropped in on Euless Guns & Ammo yesterday and asked about it, and he told me he doesn't have the tools to do it. Sorry I can't tell you anything about Ray's.ntexaschl wrote:You're probably right, Annoyed...should've bought a CDP. I called Euless Guns & Ammo today. Was told they don't do checkering. You're probably right. The Stainless Ultra Carry II was what EGA had on the shelf when I was there, so I bought it.DoubleJ wrote:Shoulda bought a CDP, they already have it done...The Annoyed Man wrote:I just tried phoning Williamson Precision, with the same question regarding checkering the front strap of a Kimber Stainless Ultra Carry II, and he said he would have to call me back early next week with a price and he took my number.

Re: front strap checkering
just funnin' with ya.
what would some Hogue grips do for ya? or how about putting some of the "skateboard" grip-tape? plenty of low-cost options out there...

Re: front strap checkering
Thanks for the input DoubleJ. I've thought about several low-cost options. Both functionality and appearance count, so, I don't mind spending a bit more. Think I'm going to give Ray's some more thought.
