HELP: AIRPLANE CARRY

I'm flying out to San Fran, Cali today and will be there without my CCW. I want to bring my pocket knife and pepper spray with me. My question is are you allowed to pack those and put it in my checked in baggage, or is it a no go? I know for sure you can't have it on your carry on baggage.

For others out there that don't want to read the link, I have flown with both my pocket knife and pepper spray packed in my checked baggage. No problems.

I wouldn't recommend following any advice on any forum without checking the law behind it. Just becasue someone has done something before does not make it right

Being a pilot and director of a cargo airline myself, there are very specific reasons for some of the banned and HAZMAT items on aircraft, especially mace or pepper spray.

Here is a quote from the TSA article regarding Mace/pepper spray:

Mace/Pepper Spray - One 118 ml or 4 Fl. oz. container of mace or pepper spray is permitted in checked baggage provided it is equipped with a safety mechanism to prevent accidental discharge.

Enclosed cabins and pepper spray do not mix!!

I never said I flew with it in my carry-on, I said I flew with it in my checked baggage, in compliance with TSA regulations.

I have yet to see a can of mace/pepper spray that did not have some sort of safety mechanism on it.

TSA regulations change all of the time. Its a good idea to check the law each time you fly, and not trust hearsay.

Most passenger aircraft carry checked baggage in the same enclosed cabin as the passengers, but I don't think that anyone accused you of putting it in your carry on.

I have yet to see a can of mace/pepper spray that did not have some sort of safety mechanism on it.

Not too many years ago it was common for such sprays to have no real safety beyond a cap.

I have removed some of those from checked bags myself, including one package of twelve still in the wrap - boy did that guy go ballistic.

BTW, I saw many knives go through over the time I was with TSA, and only once did anyone even do much more than blink twice, and that was because the colletion of knives was rather large and included a bunch that were nominally in violation of TX law. Some discussion took place as to what to do, but calmer heads prevailed by pointing out that knives were not something we were supposed to be looking for, and besides, it was likely the guy was a dealer and therefore exempt under TX law.

The next time you're in Dallas just ask any of our officers to show you our OC spray. There are no safety mechanisms on them other than keeping your finger off the button. I'm sure most of the OC spray/mace that LEOs carry is the same way.

Just got back home from Cali. Pepper Spray and pocket was not a problem at all. Asked one of the TSA agent and he said just as long it's in your checked in baggage and you are okay.
