Gee, I feel more normal now. Just one of the many left eyed, right handed.
I've always shot a pistol right handed, but rifles and shotguns left handed. Over the years I worked on weak hand (left) pistol shooting. I'm glad I did. Now I have nerve damage that affects my right arm and hand. I can still shoot right handed but I actually shoot tighter groups left handed.
My advice would be to become proficient with both hands! Someday you might not have a choice which hand to shoot with.

I'm also right handed/left eye dominant. (Seems like this is a more common condition than I thought.) I shoot right-handed and don't like the awkardness of trying to sight with my left eye, so I've forced myself to learn to sight "right-eyed", which has worked out quite well. As a previous poster said, the human brain is able to compensate for a great many things.

My son is in an even more confusing situation, but ultimately better off. He's ambidextrous. He shoots a rifle right-handed, but is also left eye dominant. But since he uses a scope on both his rifles this isn't a problem. The ambidexterity comes in handy because he prefers to shoot a pistol left-handed due to his left eye dominance. He's got it made either way.

I learned just this past week that I'm also right-handed/left eye dominant. I wonder if that explains why I often have trouble sighting handguns right-handed, especially with smaller guns. I shoot right-handed, but site with my left eye. I discovered several months ago that I get far better accuracy when I shoot with both eyes open, although that's unacceptable for obvious reasons.

I'm going to try forcing myself to close my left eye and sight with the right one and see what changes.

OK, I don't understand...Why is it unacceptable to shoot with both eyes open?
When you take the time out of your day to beat someone, it has a much longer lasting effect on their demeanor than simply shooting or tazing them.

A quick one is to pick a smallish object at a decent distance away from you: an example would be a doorknob 15 or so feet distant. Keep both eyes open, extend a thumb (either hand), and raise your thumb so that the thumbnail is centered right on the focus object (doorknob). The thumb will look a little blurred, of course, because you are focusing your sight in the distance; but there will be a definite position where--with both eyes open--the thumbnail will be smack over the doorknob.

Now, don't move your thumb. Close one eye, then open it and close the other. With one of your eyes open, your thumb will completely block your view of the doorknob. With the other eye open, your thumb will be well to the side of the doorknob.

Whichever eye you're using when the thumb completely blocks the doorknob is your dominant eye.

That's a good question. I guess I've always been taught to shut one of your eyes and never questioned it! Maybe I should! :???:

It doesn't matter whether you shoot with one eye closed or both open. Your dominant eye will decide your sight alignment.

If you shoot with one eye shut you lose the peripheral vision from what ever side you close you eye one. You can view more of the area with both eyes open. I use to shoot with one eye closed but as I practice with keeping them both open its just as easy.

Thanks for all the tips. I guess the answer is to not worry about it and teach him to shoot with both hands.

Works for me.

Thats the best way to do it. That way when he gets older and gets to a trick stage in a IDPA match or something he can swap hands and take home the gold. :cheers2: :fire
