Private groups banning weapons on public turf

Post by ELB »

We've had several discussions about private organizations banning weapons, including CHL carry, in/on public facilities, e.g. the American Airlines Center up (for me) in Dallas. So when I find someone who seems to understand the rules, maybe it is worth mentioning that too.

In our local burg, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce had a fiesta on the town square, to include the world famous -- ok, locally famous -- chihuahua races (among other things like music and so forth). The previous weekend there was a stabbing in San Antonio at an outdoor event, the stabber being one of our local teens, who is now in jail charged with murder. The HCC decided to ban weapons at the fiesta event, and this was duly noted on the front page of the local newspaper. Didn't say CHL was banned, didn't say it wasn't, just that the police would be using metal detectors at the entrance.

When I arrived, there was indeed an officer with a wand-type metal detector checking people, and as I walked up I saw a couple people get turned away, who then ran back to their cars to store something. When I got to him I told him I had a CHL and a concealed handgun to go with it. He shook my hand, said that's OK, and motioned me in. I told him he was a good man and went in to join my wife, who had been working a non-profit booth (with her CHL and accoutrements, of course) all day. (She arrived well before the metal-detecting started).

So was nice to see some folks understand the law!

oh, and the chihuahua race was a success I guess, altho most of the dogs did not seem to understand the concept of a "race." Most of them, at the word "GO!" wandered around the starting line looking confused about why 100 people were all yelling.

Kudos. That's EXACTLY what I'd expect to happen at an event like this, that "bans" weapons.

Good report! Kudos for being bold enough to challenge the checkpoint.

As for a Chihuahua race, I believe the best way to see speed in action would be to have each dog start hunkered down by its owner in a recliner, then have a pizza guy ring the doorbell.

That's the best way to "launch" one, in my experience.
