Those steel targets are both enjoyable and frustrating. You MUST watch your sight. You will be addicted on your first run. I went with Jbirds on my first try and got hooked immediately. Just try it you'll like it. Eyes and ears as always.

Re: Steel Targets
Some of the best days shooting have been with nothing more than a .22 rifle and a .22 pistol with some resetting steel targets from Cabela's and a TON of ammo. I like to put one target at a ridiculously long distance and see how many time we can hit it.

In the 80's I shot mettalic silhouettes, it was a blast. Chickens at 50 meters, pigs at 100 meters, turkeys at 150 meters and rams at 200 meters. Did that with a handgun, used mostly my super blackhawk in 44 magnum with 10 1/2" barrel. Also used Remington XP-100 in 7br. It was slow fire but timed, 5 shots in 2 minutes and was laying down in creedmore position. Sold all those long barrel guns and now using semi-autos, shoot steel plates at 15 yards at ASC now. Its still fun to hear the clink of bullets hitting steel and seeing them fall down. When you hit your first steel ram at 200 meters it's really a blast, they fall in slow motion. Those were the good old days.

Spinners. Plates. Poppers. It's all good.
The only downside is now I get bored punching paper.

Don't ever shoot at an old bowling ball. I know from experience that they do ricochet.

My posts on this website are worth every cent you paid me for them.
Re: Steel Targets
I shot a bowling ball one time with my 44, it was one of those old rubber ones. I stood behind a tree while shooting it, took a big chuck out of it.

Re: Steel Targets
I'm one of those unfortunate ones that have never had the pleasure of shooting steel. I've got half a century of handling and firing guns but it has always been cans, bottles, pine cones, etc or what ever we could find on visits to the country or paper at the ranges.
I'm a city boy through and through and have never wanted to live in the country full time but I would really LOVE to have some property somewhere where I could design and build my own steel target set up. I have seen some awesome home made set-ups and it would add a new deminsion to my plinking. Meanwhile I'll just continue killin' the paper bad guys.

Check out Pearland Shooting Club ( www.psc-range.com ), about half-way between Friendswood and Alvin along FM 528. They have a plate rack. Also see the thread on Texas CHL Day at PSC.Walkin' Jack wrote:I'm one of those unfortunate ones that have never had the pleasure of shooting steel.
