Interesting youtube video...

Post by The Annoyed Man »

Moderators, I'm not sure if this is the correct forum or not, and I am not certain if this violates any forum rules regarding religious discussion, so feel free to do what you have to do.

This video discusses Jesus as a supporter of the RKBA. Pretty interesting stuff, plus it is visually interesting.

I agree with what was said and that this subject does affect a large number of CHL holders on this board and in Texas. Some choose not to hold the same beliefs as I do and if they have an issue with others of their faith not agreeing with them, I think it should be discussed as well. The video is specific to Christianity so I will comment on that.

The reaction of the book store guy is typical among many people. They live lives of "Blind Pacifism" that does not allow them to question things that they assume to be true. Sgt. York, before WW1, is one who is said to have pondered if there were times God and our Christian faith would allow for us to take another’s life. He found, as many of us have, that it does. I have yet to meet anyone who studies the subject independently and honestly that does not agree.

If a person chooses to be a pacifist, with full knowledge of what that means, I will not put them down. That is what Christ did to serve his purpose on this earth. As well, if a person chooses to take that "sword" Jesus spoke of it is fine too. It is, for me, situational and I would choose not to defend myself if it would glorify God (I hope!). I feel I would be rebellious if I considered my life here of greater worth than the Christ’s. I wrote the last part of that because I do not know what the future will bring me or us. Each must choose according to their own life. I cannot hold to one ideology(CHL) over what I consider the absolute truth. Legal or not, right or not, if it doesn't meet with Gods will I don't want to be part of it. I am a free man and will remain so long after CHL is forgotten by time. Here and now, I carry and shoot to stop. The rest is up to God.

When I was brand new at owning firearms, I was also shortly after that a brand new Christian. I puzzled over whether or not ownership of a gun for self-defense was showing a lack of trust in God's provision for us. I eventually came to the conclusion that God often (but not always) acts through some human agent of His will to carry out some specific task He has in mind, and that He calls on different people for different things. That might also mean that He would call someone out to act as the deliverer of my family or me in a time of danger. It was therefore also possible that He might call on me to be the that agent of His will in that scenario. Or not. But I realized that, if it were to fall to me, according to God's will, to be the protector of my family or myself, then I should be prepared to answer that call in the event He requires it of me.

Now, I don't know if you would call that rationalizing something away, or if it might actually be theologically sound. Whatever the case, I relaxed about that piece of the puzzle afterward.

The saying "God helps those who help themselves" has deep implications to ponder.

In one sense yes, except that it isn't biblical. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that God helps those who help themselves. In fact, the Bible is replete with examples of God helping people who did nothing to help themselves - unless you count prayer. There are also examples of God not helping those who help themselves. Goliath and his pals were helping themselves to a big plate of Israel, until David put paid to that, for God's glory (1 Samuel 17:26). So it might be said that God helps those who help themselves, if they do what they do for His glory. But I'm not sure that even that is biblical. (When I've retired, I'm going to go to Seminary, just because I am always interested in these noodle twisters.)

Apparently, Benjamin Franklin is the one most commonly given credit for that.

I totally agree. However, I fall way short.

God has granted us the right to self-defense. Looking at the Old Testament we can see many examples as well as "just wars" .

1 Peter 5:8-9
8. Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

Zechariah 9:8
But I will defend my house against marauding forces. Never again will an oppressor overrun my people, for now I am keeping watch.

Nehemiah 4:14
After I looked things over, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, "Don't be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes."

Proverbs 22:3
A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it.
