Broke in a couple of newbies today!

Post by The Annoyed Man »

I have this neighbor named Gary across the street from me. Great guy! We get along real well. A couple of weeks ago, he told me, "we feel so safe knowing that you're right across the street with all those guns." I told him, "Gary, you'd feel safer if they were on your side of the street!" Anyway, I asked him a while back if he wanted my son and I to take him and his son shooting some time. He thought that would be great.

So anyway, we took the two of them to the Dallas Pistol Club range this afternoon. They had a ball. We started them out on a USP Compact in .40. From there, we went to the 1911s (5" Taurus, 3" Kimber). Then to a 642 Airweight. Then back to the .45s. Then we got them on the .44 Magnum, and they were giggling and having a blast. Then on to the Keltec P3AT. Then back to the USP. And we finished back on the 1911s.

They actually did really well for beginners. I wouldn't have offered them the chance to try the .44, but they were both doing so well, and they picked it up so quickly, that I thought "why the heck not?" Even after that abuse, neither of them ever developed a flinch. I'm really proud of how they did, and they paid attention to and were diligent about safety.

About half way through, I asked the son how long he thought it would be before his dad went out and bought a pistol without telling his wife. He said, "probably when we get home." Gary later said that he wanted to get one by Christmas. But they both said they wanted to go with us again. Like I said, they both had a ball. They both want to go shoot rifles with us now.

Gary is about my age, and his son and my son are both 18. It was a great father/son afternoon, and we brought two new shooters into the shooting community today.

Great to have neighbors like that. Now you can save gas money and carpool to the range! :thumbs2:
