Please tell me this was a typo, or a spelling problem.

From an online dictionary:
"ma·roon 1 (m-rn)
...
1a. A fugitive Black slave in the West Indies in the 17th and 18th centuries.
b. A descendant of such a slave."
...

And I will assure you that my tongue is not in my cheek.

I think it was a reference to a common Bugs Bunny saying which, in Bugs-ese, meant "stupid person".

Certainly nobody is making an intentional racial statement.

My "it" referred to typing error or spelling problem. Just today ai typed "fiend" when I ment friend. I have transposed & mispelled words terribly on this keyboard.

and now we need to return this to the original topic of DC gun law vote today.

My apologies to all. It appears that I was indeed taking on Bugs Bunny, and was awfully oversensitive. I guess I missed Bugs as a young'un. Sorry, AnnoyedMan. Pls don't be too annoyed with me. I trip over my tongue all the time.

Again, my sincere apologies.

Well, I recognized it for what it was, a quote from the long eared grey philosopher himself. Heard that saying so often, from that buck toothed visage leering out of the movie screen, that I became inured to it and a user myself.

I seem to recall Mel Blanc stating, in an interview, that he took the word from a "Bowery Boys" movie bit involving one character who mangled the English language consistently, such as pronouncing DEBRIS (Debree) as "DERBIS," and amblyance and such.

Of course these days even referring to the Physics/Astronomical phenomenon wherein a star collapses and even light will not escape its gravitational field, resulting in a lack of light, by its apparant color, takes on racial overtones.

Jim, I honestly had no idea that it might have an offensive origin. I was quoting Bugs Bunny, who used to say that in a lot of those cartoons. I always assumed that it meant "idiots," and that it was some kind of derivative of the adjective "marooned," as in "stranded." If the definition you quote is the actual meaning of the term in the Bugs Bunny cartoons, then I apologize because I would never say (or think) anything intentionally racist, and I have chastised others for the same kind of offense. So, while it was not a typo or spelling problem, it was definitely not posted in any kind of racially motivated malice. I worship a God who made all skin colors, and I believe racism in all its manifestations to be offensive to God.

Edited to add the following...
I see that others had already explained my meaning before I posted the above. Anyway, no apology is necessary. Your heart was in the right place, so no harm, no foul.

I think the origin, which I meant to include in my post above, had to do with a corruption of MORON.

Edited to add:

Your attitude taken with my unfair and undeserved implication is so very much appreciated. A PM is coming which perhaps might explain why I was so sensitive. Mea culpa.
