Selling guns at discount to "save lives"

"The owner of a company that sold firearm merchandise to both the Virginia Tech University and Northern Illinois University shooters announced Wednesday that he will sell his guns at cost for the next two weeks in hopes that "law-abiding" citizens will buy them to prevent similar tragedies." It might work if the politicians weren't helping the criminals by disarming the good guys.

After reading the article, it appears that Mr. Thompson has taken a high profile and principled stand, which he has articulated fearlessly, even after what he has been put through by the media for something that he had absolutely no way of preventing other than not being in business at all (which is where the antis would like him to be). He should be commended for his courage.

I think CNN did a reasonably balanced job of reporting on the situation. Their intent in running the story may have been to scare and enrage the horses and stir up sentiment for more goofy laws after Heller, but I suspect the actual effect will be to get a lot of people thinking about the logic of Mr. Thompson's action. The sharp spike in CHL applications in several states suggests this is happening already. There may not be as many slow learners in this country as some of the media magnates seem to think. This could turn out to be a situation where the media does some accidental good by being so out of touch with the thinking of people who work for a living that they don't understand the real effects their story may have.
