magazine problem....

hey yall, I just put some new federal hydroshock ammo in my glock 30 and after finally managing to get 10 rounds in the magazine, I shook it and could hear a rattle in one of them.

Is there any advice yall could give me? Is a rattle a problem?

To be on the safe side, my first suggestion would be to unload the magazine, disassemble it completely, and look for debris or broken parts that may be loose and able to move around inside.

First of all, describe the rattle; does it sound like there's something loose, or does it sound heavier? In general, I would agree with Excalibur that the mag needs to be unloaded and disassembled, but we might be able to give you more to look for.

My 17 round Glock 17 mags do this with 16 rounds in them. Its wierd but I have found 16 rounds is the sweet spot for the 9th round to have no pressure on it from the top or bottom because of the way a double stack staggers the round. And if you shake the mag the loose bullet will rattle.

It has never been an issue for me, shooting or feeding. Just annoying when you hear it.

Anyone got a more educated opinion?

My mags always have a slight rattle whenever they have more than 10 rounds loaded. The rattle goes away when it's inserted into the pistol.

In my case, I don't think anything is actually loose but the rounds are "loose" enough to slide front to back inside the mag. I guess when it's inserted into the firearm the action of pushing the top round in a bit causes better alignment keeping the rattle away. Just a theory.

I've never had any issues with them not feeding.

It's just the way the rounds line up in a double stacked mag. It goes away when you insert the mag.

The rattle is normal, but I do agree that it is a great idea to learn how to pull those mags apart and clean them once a year

btw, I found the rattle practicing inserting a mag quickly into my glock.

I've gotten pretty fast with my 1911's but the double stack feels ALOT different.

With Berettas, there's an indention in the center of the baseplate. You simply push it in and force the baseplate forward. Watch out for the spring because it will fly, fly, fly.

As far as any lube goes, there might be some cosmoline type grease on the spring itself but I've never seen anything else in there besides lint.

It might be a good idea to do the disassembly (and reassembly, until you get familiar with it) inside a plastic bag. If the spring does jump away from you, it can't go far.

Don't ask me how I know this.

lol reminds me of the last time I was cleaning my 1911, I put all the pieces on a white towel and lo and behold when I go to put them back together again, my slide release is missing. that thing took a prayer to jesus to find. literally, I searched for an hour, then prayed, then wth its right here!

A 3/32" punch is the same size as a Glock tool...they are availble at Sears for about three bucks.
