TS Edouard is Acomin'
Tropical storm Edouard is headed our way. Looks like the current track takes it right over Homestead Anygunanywhere.
Mrs. Anygun and I stayed up late. Brought the generators down from storage. Actually, I brought two down and one rolled down the stairs. The bike handlegrip thingy pulled off as I was easing it down the stairs. I did the old "look around to make sure no one saw me" and set the generator upright. No leaking oil. No hanging pieces. It even started once I gassed it up.
Went to Wally World and bought water, non-perishable food, batteries, the usual. I asked for some cookies but was denied. "No junk food" she says. "You can cook us some burgers this evening. You like meat more than cookies anyway". She knows me pretty well. Mmmmmm. Beef. It's whats for dinner.
Gassed up some gas cans. I am not certain I can afford to stock up on diesel. Might need congress to pass another bailout bill. Maybe I will get me one of those FEMA debit cards. Not likely.
Checked the Winchester Defender I keep in the closet. Mrs. Anygun asked "What are you doing?"
I said "Times like these bring out the freaks and crazies. I am checking the freak and crazy loads to make sure we are ready to rock. These are the 3 inch magnum freak and crazy loads." I got a nod of approval.
I am on my way home now to move things around the garage and store stuff. The plastic furniture is going in the pool.
The in-laws that live in trailers in Galveston County are headed over. Mrs. Anygun will have babies to play with and sisters to help in the kitchen. I will breakout the kiddie table for the kiddoes. I often sit there during meals to get the proper perspective on life and current events like what Spongebob is flaunting for fashion these days.
The male in-laws. Sheesh. I get to entertain a bunch of democrats. At least one of them is pro-gun. The rest I will have to tolerate. Playing host will be a test of my patience. NO Obamassiah talk. Maybe I will just break out my guy movie stack. Nothing like a Sam Elliot or Tom Selleck movie to raise my spirits. Maybe Lonesome Dove.
I need to remember to bring in another EBR and EBS. Maybe some ammo. Duct tape. Must remember duct tape and plastic sheeting.

Re: TS Edouard is Acomin'
Well luckily, it's near impossible for my place to flood, but our power and cable are already too finicky without throwing a storm in the mix. I stocked up on granola bars, water, batteries, candles, tuna, beef jerky (mmmmm jerky), and mixed nuts. Unfortunately we can't have generators at the apartments, but I made sure that everything I have of critical importance can either be powered by my car, batteries, or hand cranking. I wish I had a working shotgun though

I get stuck riding this out at work, I have until 6pm to get my family squared away then I report to work. I actually ran to Home Depot and bought a generator I saw last week. It was on clearance and I was surprised it was still there. It was a $700 generator marked down to $525, not too bad. At least I had an excuse to buy it, I have been wanting one for a couple years. Home Depot was selling out of generators.
Re: TS Edouard is Acomin'

Just went out and filled up the car, plus another 30 gallons in gas cans(hey, it was $3.65/gal)
Checked water-got plenty
checked vehicles-everything working
checked food
checked "Important Document" briefcase
checked bug-out gun
-contacting family in the area to make sure they are ready to go
-packing a bag of essentials
-keeping an eye on the weather channel
as soon as dad gets home we will discuss installing our pre-cut plywood window covers

BE prepared, folks! This thing is already bigger than Allison was. It can't hurt to be careful.

Re: TS Edouard is Acomin'
They made us go to class in Mississippi during hurricane Dennis in '05, even though it was still packing 100+ mph winds 300 miles inland. A group of us ended up walking to our classes in a Greek style phalanx with umbrellas and ended up in a couple newspapers as the front page photo. 10 people ended up in the hospital from trees falling on their cars, or debris, etc. Not saying you should skip, but as long as they don't keep attendance....
Teachers didn't even show up that day, so I had to go home anyway.
I must say there's nothing like "Rock Me Like a Hurricane" blasting from 20 dorm rooms to make for an awesome hurricane party though.

Maybe a little bit too late now, but Listening To Katrina ( http://www.theplacewithnoname.com/blogs ... index.html ) is full of good disaster preparedness info. I would encourage everyone to take a look. It is one guy's blog of how he dealt with Katrina and her aftermath.
On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina became the largest natural disaster in United States history. After the levees failed, it became the largest man-made disaster in United States history. This blog is a chronicle of what happened to myself and my family during those events. It is also a documentation of lessons learned from a survival and recovery viewpoint.
This blog intertwines several elements. One element is the actual experience of disaster. Another element is a step by step guide to preparing yourself and your family for the day when you might face some unforeseen circumstance. I invite you to seriously invest the time, effort, and small cost in creating your own emergency plans. If you do not know where to begin, just follow along with me and I'll take you step by step.
Something I don't want to do is make anyone afraid. Fear isn't useful. You shouldn't do any of this out of a sense of fear or panic. You should do it from a positive, forward looking philosophy. However you work that, you should do it - especially if you have kids. Many times in my youth I walked around not knowing where my next meal was coming from. That can be a little disturbing, but it doesn't hold a candle to the rising panic you feel as you're riding along with nothing but the money in your pocket, unsure if your house is still standing, with your little girls in the back seat. Trust me.
The events and stories herein are true, but I have also taken the liberty of fictionalizing certain elements here or there for a number of reasons. Some names have been changed to protect the innocent, some names have been changed to protect the guilty, and some names have been changed to protect the naive. Even so, I will not spare telling you about my many failures while celebrating my several successes. I hope that these pages will prove to be useful to you in some way. Use the menu and links at the left of any page to navigate.
I have been encouraged many times to write a book about my experience, but I have decided to publish the whole thing on the internet instead. I felt that I did not want to 'market disaster', and I didn't want an editor truncating things that I felt important. Rather than force you to buy a book that you may or may not like or use, I have provided the entire content here. If it proves useful and valuable to you and you would like to support the site, you can use the link at the bottom of any page to 'pay your own price'. I am not selling anything here, and you will not be bothered by advertisements or annoying pop-ups on this site.
There are three different resources combined here for your use. The first resource is the Listening to Katrina blog, which is a long story with many lessons. You can continue reading Listening to Katrina by using the navigation links in the menu panel at the left, or you can use the navigation buttons at the bottom of any page. The Listening to Katrina blog contains actual events of a human tragedy, and as such may contain profanity, graphic violence, nudity, and various other horrors.
The second resource is a series of worksheets in a workbook format to provide a model for your own preparations. If you want to use it, you can find it here, or in the left panel of any page by clicking WORKBOOK QUICK LINK. The workbook is 'clean' and suitable for everyone.
The third resource is a series of How To pages, which are simple instructions for various projects, including how to assemble your workbook. The How To resources are likewise 'clean' and are suitable for family use.
Enjoy.

Re: TS Edouard is Acomin'
Nothing like the threat of a tropical storm/possible hurricane to force a man to clean his garage.
All the backyard stuff is stored and all the vehicles are in the garage. I told Mrs. Anygun to take a picture of it because no one will believe it.
I'm tired. The leg hurts too.
It was tough listening to what a sissified storm this is and pack everything away. Mrs. Anygun put it in perspective for me though. She does that regularly. She said "It is nice to know that our stuff is not what will sail through the window when the winds hit."
Good luck to all of the members in the coastal counties and along the path.

We're already prepped for the storm. Have had a stock of canned foods, water, batteries, extra couple of bottles of propane, and lots of candy (my daughter's idea) since the start of the season. Vehicles are full of fuel and guns are loaded.
Prayers out to all those in the path.

There will always be prayer in schools as long as there are tests.
