model 96 Baretta
Can anyone tell me their opinions about a Baretta model96 .40cal. any issues I should know about? Cleaning and feild striping procedures. Thanks.

If I remember correctly the Beretta 96 is the same as the 92 except for the caliber.
The 92FS is the easiest gun I've ever had to Field strip.
There is a button on the (right side) across from the take down lever (left side)
push the button .. while moving the lever down.
The slide will move forward.
Push the slide all the way forward untill it comes off.
The slide, barrel, and rod & spring come off in one piece.
The frame comes off in the other hand.
The frame is as far apart as you need to go,
with your fingers wrapped around the barrel and front sight push down gently and carefully on the guide rod.
Very slowly release tension on the spring. This really wants to go flying so be be careful.
pick up the block lock gently and the whole barrel will seperate from the frame.
Clean the barrel and everything like you would any other gun. I use Carberator spray to get all the inside parts of the frame that I cant get at. Be careful oiling it any more than 2 drops and you will be oiling your holster and yourself. I always put a drop on the block assembly where it pivots.
The gun goes together just like it comes apart.

As above, very easy to strip, oil and reassemble. I have the Taurus PT92 versions but they are basically the same. Shoots to POA and is very reliable. Plus 17+1 is a nice capacity.

I really like my 96FS, it's my go to ranch gun, (i.e. it will work dirty, accurate, but not hidden) I am hard on my “stuff” and this one keeps ticking.
I have a hard time hiding w/o a jacket. I carry a 45 single stack all the time, but in defense of the 96, I have never gotten a good holster.
accurate, safety, de cocker, big enough the snap form the 40 does not bother me (like it does in my H&K USPc)

I am a fan of the 92FS, though I have never gotten around to buying one of my own. That being said, I have heard (and this may be little more than just rumor) that the reason the Brigadier model was developed was because the slide needed beefing up to handle high volumes of higher pressure .40 rounds (LE use by officers who do more than their periodic qualifications). If I was to consider a Beretta 96, I would go with the Brig, just for my own peace of mind. It may not be necessary, but the price difference is not that much, as I recall. I also think the entire 92/96 series of pistols are beautiful guns. I do not like the looks of the 90-Two or the PX-4. IMO, of course.
Remember, in a life-or-death situation, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.
